Recall 18V589 affects 172 2019 Volvo XC60 hybrid vehicles for charge-cord shock or fire risk. Free inspection and replacement at any franchised Volvo dealer.

Volvo is recalling 172 2019 XC60 hybrid electric vehicles equipped with certain AeroVironment TurboCord, TurboDock, and TurboDX charging systems because capacitors inside those chargers can fail. That failure can create an electrical shock hazard or fire risk and increase the risk of injury or death; Volvo dealers will complete the recall repair free of charge.

What's wrong?

The 2019 Volvo XC60 hybrid uses an external charging system to move electricity from a wall outlet or charging dock into the vehicle's high-voltage battery. The affected equipment is the AeroVironment TurboCord and TurboDock/TurboDX charging system. Inside that charging equipment, capacitors help control and store electrical energy as the charger manages current flowing into the vehicle.

On affected XC60 vehicles, the charge cable supplier received the wrong capacitor from a sub-supplier. The shipping paperwork and reel label showed the correct part, but the components on the reel came from a different vendor. Those capacitors did not meet Volvo's product specification and were not UL compliant, so they can fail inside the charging system.

A failed capacitor can create a shock hazard or start a fire while the charging equipment is in use. There is no warning sign before failure. The customer does not get an advance indication from the charger or vehicle.

What's the safety risk?

This recall is about the charge cord, not normal driving. An electrical shock or fire can increase the risk of injury or death, and Volvo says there is no advance warning for the owner. Stop using the charging cord until a dealer inspects it and replaces it if needed. Repair is free at any franchised Volvo dealer.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2019 Volvo XC60 is included in this recall.
  2. Stop using the charging cord until a Volvo dealer inspects it.
  3. Contact a franchised Volvo dealer to schedule the free charge-cord inspection and replacement if needed.
  4. Bring the recall notice if Volvo mailed one. If not, reference recall number 18V589 when you call.
  5. Call Volvo customer service at 1-800-458-1552 with questions about the AeroVironment TurboCord, TurboDock, or TurboDX charging system.

What happens at the repair

At the dealer, a Volvo technician inspects the charge cord for the affected charging system and replaces the cord if the inspection shows it is needed. The inspection and replacement are free under the recall. Until that inspection is complete, do not use the charging cord. Volvo has a general reimbursement plan on file for related out-of-pocket repairs paid before the recall notice. Bring documented repair paperwork to the service desk so the dealer can explain the claim process.
