Recall 18V418 affects 25,579 2001-2018 Gillig Low Floor buses because slow turn signals reduce visibility. Repair is free at any franchised Gillig dealer.
Gillig is recalling 25,579 2001-2018 Low Floor transit buses because the turn signals can flash too slowly and become harder for other drivers to see. Reduced turn-signal visibility can increase crash risk, and Gillig dealers will complete the free repair.

What's wrong?
The turn signal system on 2001-2018 Gillig Low Floor buses uses an I/O Control DINEX module to command the exterior signal lamps. When the driver selects a turn or lane change, the module switches the lamps on and off at a steady rate so nearby drivers can see the bus's intent.
On affected buses, the software timing in that control module is too tight. The program calls for the lamps to stay on for 0.5 seconds and off for 0.5 seconds, which is meant to produce 60 flashes per minute. The microprocessor takes time to run each command, so the real flash rate drops below the required 60 flashes per minute. Slower flashing makes the signal less visible to other drivers.
There is no warning sign before failure. A driver or technician only notices the problem by watching the exterior turn signals and seeing that they flash more slowly than required.

Build dates run from September 17, 2001, through June 5, 2018, and the scope identifies both the turn signal and the flasher unit.

A matching year and model does not guarantee inclusion. Check your VIN to confirm whether this recall applies to your specific bus.
What's the safety risk?
Reduced turn-signal visibility makes turns and lane changes harder for other drivers to read and increases the risk of a crash. Until the software update is completed, use signals carefully and leave extra room for traffic to react. Repair is free at any franchised Gillig dealer.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2001-2018 Gillig Low Floor is included in this recall.
- Contact a franchised Gillig dealer to schedule the free turn-signal software update that corrects the slow flash rate.
- Bring the recall notice if Gillig has mailed one. If not, reference recall number 18V418 when you call.
- Use extra caution until the repair is complete, since slow turn signals are harder for other drivers to see.
What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a Gillig technician updates the software that controls the turn signal flash rate on the Low Floor bus. The recall repair is available now, and parts and labor are covered. The technician loads the corrected software, confirms the turn signals flash at the correct rate, and checks that the exterior lamps work as intended before returning the bus to service.

Frequently asked questions
What is recall 18V418?
Recall 18V418 covers 25,579 2001-2018 Gillig Low Floor transit buses with turn signals that flash too slowly, reducing visibility to other drivers and increasing crash risk. Gillig dealers will update the software that controls the turn flash rate for free.
What should I do if my 2001-2018 Gillig Low Floor is on this recall?
Check your VIN to confirm your specific bus is included in recall 18V418. If it is included, contact a Gillig dealer or Gillig customer service at 1-510-264-5073 to schedule the turn-signal software update. Reference recall 18V418 when you call.
Is the recall repair free?
Yes. Federal recall law requires manufacturers to repair safety defects and noncompliances at no cost, and Gillig dealers will update the turn-flash-rate control software free of charge.
What is the safety risk?
The safety risk is reduced turn-signal visibility. If the signals flash too slowly, other drivers have less notice that the bus is turning or changing lanes, which increases crash risk. The fix is the free software update from a Gillig dealer.
What warning signs should I watch for?
Watch for turn signals that flash more slowly than expected. This recall concerns the software that controls the turn flash rate, so a slow flash pattern is the key sign to report when scheduling service with a Gillig dealer.
