What's wrong?
The fuel tank on the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas stores gasoline under the rear of the SUV and feeds the engine through the fuel system. Its wall has to stay sealed while the vehicle moves, heats up, cools down, and carries fuel.
On affected Atlas SUVs, the tank wall was formed with thin areas during manufacturing. Volkswagen traced the defect to material starvation in the tank-making process, caused by plastic pellets that were out of specification before the supplier corrected the material. A thin area in the tank wall can open enough for gasoline to leak.
Owners can recognize the problem by a fuel odor or a fuel puddle under the vehicle. Those are warning signs that the tank is no longer sealed.

What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a Volkswagen technician replaces the fuel tank covered by recall 18V284. The replacement tank, related parts, and labor are free under the recall. This campaign expanded an earlier Volkswagen fuel tank recall, but your VIN decides whether this repair applies to your Atlas. Out-of-pocket repairs already paid are handled through the New Vehicle Limited Warranty, not through a separate reimbursement program, since all affected vehicles were still covered by that warranty. Ask the service desk how warranty coverage applies if you have prior repair paperwork.
