2018-2019 Kzrv Trailers Recall 18V242: Awning Deploy

Recall 18V242 covers 7,370 2018-2019 Kzrv recreational trailers for awnings that deploy while moving. Free repair once Kzrv opens it.

Kzrv is recalling 7,370 2018-2019 Durango, Spree, Spree Escape, Connect, Sportsmen, Sidewinder, and Venom recreational trailers under recall 18V242 because the Solera Smart Arm awning can deploy while the trailer is moving. If that happens, crash risk increases; the dealer repair will be free once Kzrv makes it available.

What's wrong?

The Solera Smart Arm awning on the 2018-2019 Kzrv Durango, Spree, Spree Escape, Connect, Sportsmen, Sidewinder, and Venom trailers is a powered shade awning mounted to the side of the trailer. Its internal wiring harness carries power and control signals to the awning motor, so the awning extends only when commanded and stays stowed while the trailer is moving.

On affected trailers, the connector inside that wiring harness does not keep water out of the connection. When water enters, it can energize the motor circuit even when the owner has not operated the awning control. The awning can start to open on its own; once part of it is exposed while the trailer is in motion, wind can catch the fabric and pull it fully open.

There is no warning sign before failure. The awning can begin deploying without a warning light, sound, or visible symptom before it starts to move.

The year and model narrow the scope, but the VIN decides. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific trailer is included.

What's the safety risk?

If the awning deploys while the RV is moving, it can create a crash risk. There is no warning sign before deployment, so treat any unexpected awning movement or controller problem as a reason to stop and call a Kzrv dealer. Repair will be free at any franchised Kzrv dealer once available.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2018-2019 Kzrv Durango, Spree, Spree Escape, Connect, Sportsmen, Sidewinder, or Venom recreational trailer is included in this recall.
  2. Wait for Kzrv's repair notice before scheduling service; the dealer repair will be free once it opens.
  3. Contact Kzrv customer service at 1-800-768-4016 with questions about the awning-controller replacement that keeps the Solera Smart Arm awning from deploying while moving.
  4. Reference recall number 18V242 and Kzrv recall KZ-2018-04 when you call.
  5. Keep the awning secured before towing the trailer, and stop using the trailer if the awning does not stay closed.

What happens at the repair

Once the final repair is available, a Kzrv technician will replace the Solera Smart Arm awning controller, the part tied to unintended awning deployment while the trailer is moving. Kzrv contacted owners after the recall began on June 15, 2018. If the dealer says the final parts are not open for your VIN yet, ask when the free controller replacement will be available. The final dealer repair will be free once it opens.

Frequently asked questions

What is recall 18V242?

Recall 18V242 covers 7,370 2018-2019 Kzrv Durango, Spree, Spree Escape, Connect, Sportsmen, Sidewinder, and Venom recreational trailers. The Solera Smart Arm awning can deploy while the trailer is moving, increasing crash risk. Kzrv dealers replace the awning controller for free.

What should I do if my 2018-2019 Kzrv Durango, Spree, Spree Escape, Connect, Sportsmen, Sidewinder, or Venom is on this recall?

Check your VIN to confirm your specific trailer is included in recall 18V242. If it is, contact a franchised Kzrv dealer to schedule the awning controller replacement. Reference recall number 18V242 when you call. The dealer repair is free.

Is the recall repair free?

Yes. Federal recall law requires the manufacturer to repair the defect at no cost. For recall 18V242, Kzrv dealers replace the Solera Smart Arm awning controller free of charge.

What is the safety risk?

The safety risk is an awning deploying while the trailer is moving. An open awning can affect nearby traffic and increase crash risk. If your VIN is included, arrange the free controller replacement before towing the trailer again.

What if I bought my Kzrv trailer used?

The free recall repair still applies. Recalls follow the VIN, not the first owner, so a used 2018-2019 Kzrv Durango, Spree, Spree Escape, Connect, Sportsmen, Sidewinder, or Venom still qualifies if its VIN is included.
