What's wrong?
The windshield wiper linkage on the 2011-2016 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is the set of rods and joints under the cowl at the base of the windshield. The wiper motor moves this linkage, and the linkage turns that motion into the back-and-forth sweep of the wiper arms. The ball joint in that linkage has to stay connected and protected from water so the wipers keep moving together.
On affected vehicles, water runs along the back side of the front deck garnish between the hood and windshield. It drops onto the wiper link and gets into the rubber boot that covers the ball joint. Over time, that trapped water corrodes the joint. If the joint separates, the wiper link no longer carries motion from the motor to the wipers, and the wipers stop working.
There is no warning sign before failure. The first thing an owner notices can be wipers that stop moving or fail to clear the windshield.
