Recall 17V845 affects 159 2016-2018 Volvo Bus 9700 buses for loose power-cable hardware that can overheat. Repair is free at a franchised Volvo Bus dealer.

Volvo Bus is recalling 159 2016-2018 9700 buses equipped with I-Start because the hardware that attaches the power supply cable to the fuse box was not properly tightened. What's wrong?

The power supply cable on 2016-2018 Volvo Bus 9700 buses with I-Start carries electrical power into the fuse box. The fuse box then feeds and protects electrical circuits across the bus, including driver-facing equipment. The cable connection has to stay tight so current moves through clean metal contact instead of through a loose, hot point.

On affected buses, the nut that attaches the cable to the fuse box stud was not tightened to the correct torque during manufacturing. A loose connection creates extra electrical resistance at that attachment point. As current passes through, the cable end and fuse box can overheat instead of carrying power normally.

A driver can notice an interruption of power to items such as dash lighting before the connection overheats further. That loss of power is the warning sign to report when calling the Volvo Bus dealer or service provider.

What's the safety risk?

An overheated power cable or fuse box raises fire risk. Loss of power to dash lighting or other electrical items is a warning sign; if that happens, stop using the bus and arrange service. The dealer inspects the fuse box, replaces damaged parts, and tightens the power cable connection. Repair is free at any franchised Volvo Bus dealer.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2016-2018 Volvo Bus 9700 is included in this recall.
  2. Contact a franchised Volvo Bus dealer to schedule the free fuse-box inspection and power-cable fastener repair that addresses overheating at the cable connection.
  3. Bring the recall notice if Volvo Bus mailed one. If not, reference recall number 17V845 when you call.
  4. Ask the dealer whether the bus should stay out of service until inspection if you see heat damage near the fuse box or power cable.

What happens at the repair

At the dealer, a Volvo Bus technician inspects the fuse box for heat damage and replaces it if damage is found. The technician also replaces and tightens the nuts that attach the power supply cable to the fuse box. The recall repair is free, including parts and labor. If you already paid for a related repair before the owner notice, Volvo Bus's standard reimbursement plan covers eligible documented expenses. Bring the repair paperwork to the service desk.
