2004-2006 Mazda B-Series Truck Recall 17V806: Air Bag

Recall 17V806 affects 17,576 2004-2006 Mazda B-Series Truck vehicles for passenger air bag inflator rupture. Do not drive. Free repair at any franchised Mazda dealer.

Do not drive

Do not drive this B-Series Truck until the passenger frontal air bag inflator is replaced. In a crash that deploys the passenger frontal air bag, a ruptured inflator can send metal fragments into occupants and cause serious injury or death. Arrange towing if the truck must move. Repair is free at any franchised Mazda dealer.

Mazda is recalling 17,576 2004-2006 B-Series Truck vehicles under recall 17V806 because the passenger frontal air bag inflator can rupture during deployment. Metal fragments can strike occupants in a crash, which increases the risk of serious injury or death. Do not drive an affected truck until a Mazda dealer completes the free repair.

What's wrong?

The passenger side frontal air bag inflator in the 2004-2006 Mazda B-Series Truck is the metal canister inside the passenger air bag module. In a crash that triggers the passenger air bag, the inflator produces gas that fills the bag fast enough to cushion the occupant.

On affected trucks, the Takata SPI inflator uses non-desiccated phased-stabilized ammonium nitrate propellant. That propellant can degrade after several years of high humidity, high temperatures, and repeated temperature swings. If the passenger air bag deploys after that degradation, pressure inside the inflator can rise too high and rupture the inflator instead of venting normally.

There is no warning sign before failure. The problem appears only during air bag deployment, so an affected truck can look and drive normally until a crash triggers the passenger frontal air bag.

Who's affected?

Spans the 2004, 2005, and 2006 model years for the same front air bag inflator module.

What's the safety risk?

Do not drive this B-Series Truck until the passenger frontal air bag inflator is replaced. In a crash that deploys the passenger frontal air bag, a ruptured inflator can send metal fragments into occupants and cause serious injury or death. Arrange towing if the truck must move. Repair is free at any franchised Mazda dealer.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2004-2006 Mazda B-Series Truck is included in this recall.
  2. Do not drive the truck until the passenger air bag inflator repair is complete.
  3. Arrange a tow if the truck must be moved to the dealer; do not drive it there yourself.
  4. Contact a franchised Mazda dealer to schedule the free passenger air bag inflator replacement that installs an alternate inflator.
  5. Bring the recall notice if you have it. If not, reference recall number 17V806 and Mazda recall 1817L when you call.
  6. Return to the dealer even if the truck received a replacement inflator under recall 15V-346; this recall requires an alternate inflator.

What happens at the repair

At the dealer, a Mazda technician replaces the passenger side frontal air bag inflator with an alternate inflator. The recall repair is free, including parts and labor. Do not drive the truck until that repair is complete. Vehicles repaired under the earlier campaign still need this alternate inflator installed. Mazda has a general reimbursement plan on file for this recall, so bring documentation for any prior related air bag inflator repair and ask the service desk how to submit it.

Frequently asked questions

What is recall 17V806?

Recall 17V806 covers 17,576 2004-2006 Mazda B-Series Truck vehicles with passenger frontal air bag inflators that can rupture during deployment. Metal fragments can strike occupants and cause serious injury or death. Mazda dealers will replace the passenger-side inflator for free.

What should I do if my 2004-2006 Mazda B-Series Truck is on this recall?

Check your VIN to confirm your specific truck is included in recall 17V806. If it is, do not drive the vehicle until a franchised Mazda dealer replaces the passenger-side frontal air bag inflator for free. Ask the dealer about towing before moving the truck.

Is the recall repair free?

Yes. Federal recall law requires the manufacturer to repair the defect at no cost, and Mazda dealers will replace the passenger-side frontal air bag inflator free of charge. Reference recall 17V806 or Mazda recall number 1817L when you call.

Do I need to stop driving my Mazda B-Series Truck?

Do not drive the vehicle until the recall repair is complete. Mazda advised owners not to drive affected trucks because the passenger frontal air bag inflator can rupture in a crash deployment and send metal fragments into the cabin. Ask a Mazda dealer about towing.

What if my truck was already repaired under the earlier Mazda air bag recall?

Your truck still needs this recall checked. Mazda says recall 17V806 supersedes recall 15V-346, and vehicles repaired under the earlier campaign need to return to a dealer for an alternate passenger air bag inflator.
