What's wrong?
The recalled part is the Kidde plastic-handle or push-button Pindicator fire extinguisher installed in affected 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 International Durastar, 9100I, 4900, 4700, Lt, Prostar, Terrastar, and Transtar trucks. A truck fire extinguisher is meant to discharge powder quickly when the handle or button is pressed, giving the driver or crew a way to attack a small fire before it spreads.
The defect is inside the extinguisher valve and discharge path. On plastic-handle units, the extinguisher can clog or require too much force after the lever is pressed and released quickly, leaving powder or air in the mechanism instead of a full discharge. On certain models, the nozzle can detach from the valve assembly with enough force to injure someone and leave the extinguisher unusable. Pindicator units can also take excessive force to activate.
There is no warning sign before failure. The extinguisher can appear ready until someone tries to use it during a fire.
