What's wrong?
The recalled 2010, 2011, 2016, 2017, 2018 Heartland recreational vehicles have certain Kidde plastic-handle or push-button 'Pindicator' fire extinguishers. The extinguisher is supposed to release fire-suppressing powder when the handle or button is pressed, giving an owner a first response tool for a small fire inside or near the vehicle.
On the plastic-handle extinguishers, the valve can clog or require excessive force to activate after a brief press and release. That leaves the extinguisher unable to discharge as expected when it is needed. On certain models, the nozzle can also detach from the valve assembly with enough force to injure someone and leave the extinguisher inoperable.
For the push-button 'Pindicator' extinguishers, the problem is activation force. The button can take more force than expected before the extinguisher works. There is no warning sign before failure.

What's the safety risk?
If a fire starts, a recalled extinguisher that does not operate properly can leave occupants without the fire response they expect and increase the risk of injury. There is no known warning sign before failure. Until the replacement is handled, keep another working extinguisher available. Repair is free at any franchised Heartland dealer.

- Keep another working fire extinguisher in the RV until the recalled Kidde extinguisher is replaced.
What happens at the repair
Heartland's remedy is a free replacement fire extinguisher through Kidde, not a repair to the RV itself. Heartland notifies owners and directs them to contact Kidde for the replacement unit. If your VIN is included, have the campaign number and extinguisher information ready when you contact Heartland customer service or Kidde. Heartland has a general reimbursement plan on file, so owners who already paid for a covered replacement should keep proof of payment and ask Heartland how to submit a claim.
