What's wrong?
The recalled equipment is a Walter Kidde plastic handle fire extinguisher installed in affected Isuzu trucks. The extinguisher is supposed to release fire fighting agent through its valve and nozzle when the handle is pressed, giving the driver or crew a way to respond to a small fire before help arrives.
On these extinguishers, the discharge path can clog, or the plastic handle and valve can require excessive force to activate. In certain units, the nozzle can separate from the valve assembly with enough force to injure someone and leave the extinguisher unusable. The replacement extinguisher uses a metal valve instead of the recalled plastic valve.
There is no warning sign before failure. The extinguisher can look ready while it is stored in the truck, then fail to discharge when someone tries to use it.
