2018 Ram Promaster Recall 17V712: Airbag Sensor Rivet

Recall 17V712 affects 3,514 2018 Ram Promaster vehicles for front door impact sensor rivets. Repair is free at any franchised Ram dealer.

Ram is recalling 3,514 2018 Promaster vans because an incorrect rivet can fracture the front door impact sensor housing. That fracture can affect standard supplemental side airbag deployment in certain side-impact crashes, increasing injury risk, and Ram dealers will complete the recall repair free of charge.

What's wrong?

The front door impact pressure sensor on the 2018 Ram Promaster is part of the side air bag system. It senses a rapid pressure change inside the door during a side impact, then gives the air bag control system information it uses to respond to that crash event. The sensor housing has to stay intact and firmly attached to the door structure.

On affected Promaster vans, the wrong rivet was used to fasten the new pressure sensor. That rivet expands outward inside the plastic mounting area of the sensor. The expansion can crack the sensor housing instead of holding it cleanly in place. Ram later specified a rivet with the correct grip reach and mandrel break force for this application.

There is no warning sign before failure. The issue is not detectable to consumers, so an owner should not expect a warning light, noise, or visible change at the door before the sensor housing is found damaged.

What's the safety risk?

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2018 Ram Promaster is included in this recall.
  2. Contact a franchised Ram dealer to schedule the free front door impact pressure sensor replacement.
  3. Reference recall number 17V712 and Ram recall T64 when you call.
  4. Bring the recall notice if you have it, and keep it with your repair paperwork.
  5. Drive cautiously until the repair is complete; the faulty door sensor housing can fracture and affect side air bag deployment in a side impact.

What happens at the repair

At the dealer, a Ram technician replaces both front door impact pressure sensors and secures them with the correct rivets. The replacement parts and labor are free under the recall. If you've already paid out of pocket for this sensor or rivet repair, Ram's reimbursement process covers confirmed expenses. The owner letter asks customers to send the original receipt or other adequate proof of payment to the company for review.
