What's wrong?
The shift lock control unit in the 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, and 2010 Toyota Sienna is part of the automatic transmission shifter. Its job is to keep the shift lever locked in Park until the driver presses the brake pedal. That brake-pedal step helps prevent the van from being shifted out of Park by accident.
In affected Sienna vans, grease inside the shift lever assembly was applied in the wrong amount or location. That grease can move onto the slider and stopper, then deteriorate over time and become thicker. When that happens, the lock no longer holds the shifter as designed, and the lever can move out of Park without the brake pedal being pressed.
There is no warning sign before failure. An owner can find the Sienna able to shift from Park without the normal brake-pedal step, even though the shifter looked and felt normal before that point.
Who's affected?
The included Sienna years come from two Toyota manufacturing windows, August 8, 2005 to March 5, 2007, and December 10, 2008 to January 4, 2010.

What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a Toyota technician replaces the shift lock solenoid and reapplies grease in the shift lock assembly. The recall repair is free, with parts and labor covered. Toyota uses its general reimbursement plan for eligible out of pocket repairs tied to this shift lock issue. If you've already paid for a related repair before the recall notice, bring your receipts or repair paperwork to the service desk and ask Toyota customer service how to submit the claim.
