Recall 17V575 affects 1,175 2016 International trucks and Hc buses for loose tie-rod hardware. Repair is free at any franchised International dealer.
International is recalling 1,175 2016 Durastar, Lonestar, Prostar, Workstar, Transtar, Terrastar, 9900I, and Hc vehicles because the castellated nut on certain Spicer D or E series steer axles can be under-torqued, letting the tie rod loosen. If that happens, the tie rod can separate from the steering knuckle and cause complete loss of steering; International dealers will complete the recall repair free of charge.

What's wrong?
The tie rod assembly on affected 2016 International Durastar, Lonestar, Prostar, Workstar, Transtar, Terrastar, 9900I, and Hc vehicles is part of the steering linkage. It connects the steer axle to the steering system so the front wheels respond when the driver turns the wheel. A castellated nut, also called a castle nut, holds the tie rod joint tight on the Spicer D or E series steer axle.
On these vehicles, that nut was not torqued correctly during assembly. Without the proper clamping force, the tie rod joint can loosen in the steer axle. If the joint loosens far enough, steering response becomes loose and the driver has less precise control of the front wheels.
Owners or drivers can notice significant noise from the steering area or looseness in the steering wheel before the part fully fails. Treat either sign as a steering problem and have the truck or bus inspected under recall 17V575.

What's the safety risk?
A loosening tie rod can separate from the steering knuckle, causing complete loss of steering and increasing crash risk. Listen for unusual noise from the steering axle and treat loose steering as a reason to stop using the truck and call the dealer. Schedule the inspection and tightening promptly. Repair is free at any franchised International dealer.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2016 International Durastar, Lonestar, Prostar, Workstar, Transtar, Terrastar, 9900I, or Hc is included in this recall.
- Contact a franchised International dealer to schedule the free steer-axle nut and tie-rod inspection that fixes the loose tie-rod condition.
- Bring the recall notice if you have it. If not, reference recall number 17V575 when you call.
- Drive cautiously until the repair is complete, and avoid unnecessary trips before the dealer confirms the tie rod is secure.
- Call International customer service at 1-331-332-1590 with questions about scheduling or recall coverage.
What happens at the repair
At the dealer, an International technician inspects the steer axle tie rod and checks the torque on the castellated nut. If the nut or tie rod is loose, the technician tightens it to the required specification. The recall repair is free, with parts and labor covered. International's standard reimbursement plan applies to qualifying repairs paid before the owner notice, and the customer notification includes the reimbursement instructions. Bring related repair paperwork if you already paid for this axle or tie rod work.

Frequently asked questions
What is recall 17V575?
Recall 17V575 covers 1,175 2016 International Durastar, Lonestar, Prostar, Workstar, Transtar, Terrastar, 9900I, and Hc vehicles with certain Spicer D or E series steer axles. The steer-axle castellated nut was not properly torqued, which can let the tie rod loosen.
What should I do if my 2016 International Durastar, Lonestar, Prostar, Workstar, Transtar, Terrastar, 9900I, or Hc is on this recall?
Check your VIN to confirm your specific vehicle is included in recall 17V575. If it is, contact a franchised International dealer to schedule the steering inspection. Reference recall number 17V575 or International recall number 17507 when you call.
Is the recall repair free?
Yes. Federal recall law requires the manufacturer to repair the defect at no cost. International dealers will inspect the castellated nut and tie rod torque, then tighten the parts if needed, free of charge.
What is the safety risk?
The risk is loss of steering. If the tie rod loosens, it can disconnect from the steering knuckle and cause a complete loss of steering, increasing crash risk. The free dealer inspection checks the torque before that failure path continues.
What if I bought this International vehicle used?
The free recall repair still applies. Recall eligibility follows the VIN, not the first owner. Check your VIN, then give the dealer recall number 17V575 or International recall number 17507 when you schedule the steering inspection.
