What's wrong?
The passenger frontal air bag inflator in affected Mazda CX-7, CX-9, and MAZDA6 vehicles is the metal device inside the passenger air bag module that fills the bag during a crash. In normal operation, the inflator burns propellant in a controlled way so the air bag opens between the passenger and the dashboard.
On these 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2012 Mazda vehicles, the Takata inflator propellant breaks down after years of high humidity, heat, and temperature cycling. If the passenger air bag deploys, degraded propellant raises internal pressure inside the inflator. That pressure puts the inflator body at risk of rupturing instead of staying sealed.
There is no warning sign before failure. The problem is inside the inflator, so the vehicle does not give the driver a light, sound, smell, or change in how it drives before the air bag is needed. Do not drive the vehicle if your VIN is included in this recall.
Who's affected?
