What's wrong?
The passenger frontal air bag inflator in the 2007-2011 Mazda CX-7, CX-9, and MAZDA6 is the metal canister inside the passenger air bag module. In a crash that requires the front air bags, the inflator burns propellant to create gas and fill the air bag fast enough to protect the passenger.
On affected vehicles, the propellant wafers inside certain Takata inflators degrade after long exposure to high absolute humidity, high heat, and temperature cycling. If the air bag activates after that degradation, the propellant can burn too aggressively. That creates excessive pressure inside the inflator, and the inflator body can rupture instead of only filling the air bag. The permanent repair replaces it with an inflator from a different supplier that does not use phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate.
There is no warning sign before failure. Do not drive an included vehicle until a Mazda dealer completes the repair.

What's the safety risk?
If the passenger frontal air bag inflator ruptures, metal fragments can strike occupants and cause serious injury or death. Do not drive the vehicle, even for short trips, until the inflator is replaced. Ask the dealer about towing if it must move. Repair is free at any franchised Mazda dealer.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2007-2011 Mazda CX-7, CX-9, or MAZDA6 is included in this recall.
- Do not drive the vehicle until the passenger frontal air bag inflator replacement is complete.
- Arrange a tow if the vehicle has to be moved to the dealer; do not drive it there yourself.
- Contact your nearest franchised Mazda dealer to schedule the free passenger frontal air bag inflator replacement, which addresses the rupture risk during a crash.
- Bring the recall notice if Mazda mailed one. If not, reference recall number 17V429 and Mazda recall 1317F when you call.
What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a Mazda technician replaces the passenger frontal air bag inflator with an alternate inflator. Parts and labor are free under the recall. Do not drive the vehicle until this repair is complete. If you paid out of pocket for a related passenger air bag inflator repair before the recall notice, Mazda has a general reimbursement plan on file. Bring repair orders and payment records to the service desk, or contact Mazda customer service for claim instructions.

Frequently asked questions
What is recall 17V429?
Recall 17V429 covers 205,377 2007-2011 Mazda CX-7, CX-9, and MAZDA6 vehicles with passenger frontal air bag inflators that can rupture during deployment. Metal fragments can strike occupants, causing serious injury or death. Do not drive until a Mazda dealer completes the free inflator replacement.
What should I do if my 2007-2011 Mazda CX-7, CX-9, or MAZDA6 is on this recall?
Check your VIN to confirm your specific Mazda is included in recall 17V429. If it is, do not drive the vehicle. Call a franchised Mazda dealer, reference recall 17V429 or Mazda recall 1317F, and ask about having the passenger frontal air bag inflator replaced for free.
Is the recall repair free?
Yes. Federal recall law requires the manufacturer to repair the safety defect at no cost, and Mazda dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator free of charge. Parts and labor are covered under recall 17V429.
What does do not drive mean for this Mazda recall?
Do not drive means the vehicle should stay parked until the recall repair is complete. The passenger frontal air bag inflator can rupture in a crash that deploys the air bag. If the vehicle must move, ask the Mazda dealer about the safest way to arrange service.
What if I bought my Mazda used?
The free recall repair still applies. Recalls follow the VIN, not the first owner, so a used 2007-2011 Mazda CX-7, CX-9, or MAZDA6 still qualifies if its VIN is included. Check your VIN, then call a franchised Mazda dealer with recall 17V429.
