What's wrong?
The 2014 Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 use electric power steering, often called EPS, to add motorized assist when the driver turns the wheel. The steering gear still has a manual path, but the electric assist reduces the effort needed, especially during parking, backing, and other low-speed turns.
On affected trucks, a high electrical load during a low-speed turn can pull system voltage down. If voltage drops below 8.8 volts for more than 1 second, the EPS assist shuts off until voltage returns to 9 volts for at least 40 milliseconds. During that gap, the truck reverts to manual steering and the wheel requires more force.
If assist drops out, the driver information center can show an EPS warning message. Other electrical systems can shut down at the same time or just before it, including the radio, StabiliTrak, chimes, door locks, air conditioning, or cruise control.
Who's affected?
The Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 share the same listed component: the power steering system.

|---|---|
| 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 | power steering system |
| Units affected | 690,685 |
A matching 2014 Silverado 1500 or Sierra 1500 does not guarantee inclusion. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific pickup truck is included.
What's the safety risk?
If electric power steering assist drops out and then returns, the steering wheel can be harder to control for a short time and crash risk increases. Watch for a driver information center message or other electrical systems shutting off near the event, and schedule the software update soon. Repair is free at any franchised Chevrolet dealer.
