2015-2016 Gillig Low Floor Recall 17V263: Air Pressure

Recall 17V263 affects 2,604 2015-2016 Gillig Low Floor buses for loose suspension kneeling-module snap rings. Repair will be free once available.

Gillig is recalling 2,604 2015-2016 Low Floor transit buses because Norgren suspension kneeling modules have solenoid valve piston snap rings with an assembly seating defect. An unexpected loss of suspension air bag pressure can abruptly lower the bus while driving or during service, increasing crash or maintenance-injury risk; the Gillig dealer repair will be free once available.

What's wrong?

The suspension kneeling module on 2015-2016 Gillig Low Floor buses controls air flow for the bus suspension. In normal use, the module directs air to the suspension air bags so the bus can lower for boarding and return to its normal ride height. Small solenoid valves inside the module open and close those air paths.

On these buses, snap rings on the solenoid valve pistons were not fully inserted and seated during assembly. A snap ring is the small retaining ring that holds a valve piston in place. If it comes out of its groove, air pressure from the suspension air bags can push the piston out of the manifold bore. The air bags then lose pressure, and the suspension drops to the bump stops instead of staying at its intended height.

There is no warning sign before failure. The filing notes that the bus still has enough ground clearance to maneuver at full kneeling height and does not contact the road surface.

Who's affected?

Covers the 2015 and 2016 Low Floor buses, both tied to the same suspension component.

A matching year and model does not confirm inclusion. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific bus is included.

What's the safety risk?

An unexpected loss of suspension air bag pressure while driving drops the suspension height abruptly and increases crash risk. The same pressure loss during service increases injury risk for maintenance personnel. There is no warning sign before pressure loss. Repair will be free at any franchised Gillig dealer once available.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2015-2016 Gillig Low Floor bus is included in this recall.
  2. Contact Gillig customer service at 1-800-735-1500 for current repair instructions and reference recall number 17V263.
  3. Schedule fleet inspection of the front and rear suspension kneeling modules once Gillig confirms the remedy path.
  4. Use the snap-ring reset tool for the kneeling-module repair, which seats the solenoid valve piston snap ring and protects suspension air bag pressure.
  5. Bring the owner notice or fleet documentation when arranging service with Gillig.

What happens at the repair

The final repair is not listed as available now. Once Gillig opens the repair, a Gillig technician or fleet service team will inspect the front and rear kneeling modules and use a snap ring reset tool to seat each snap ring in the intended groove. Gillig will provide the tool free of charge and pay fleets for the inspection. Under Gillig's reimbursement plan, fleets that already paid for the same repair should submit documentation through Gillig customer service.

Frequently asked questions

What is recall 17V263?

Recall 17V263 covers 2,604 2015-2016 Gillig Low Floor transit buses equipped with Norgren suspension kneeling modules. The solenoid valve piston snap rings were not fully seated during assembly, which can affect suspension air bag pressure and ride height. Gillig pays fleets to inspect the modules and provides the reset tool free of charge.

What should I do if my 2015-2016 Gillig Low Floor is on this recall?

Check your VIN to confirm your specific bus is included in recall 17V263. If it is, contact Gillig customer service at 1-800-735-1500 and reference recall number 17V263. Gillig pays fleets to inspect the front and rear kneeling modules and provides the snap ring reset tool free of charge.

Is the recall repair free?

Yes. Federal recall law requires manufacturers to repair safety defects at no cost, and Gillig will pay fleets to inspect the front and rear kneeling modules. Gillig also provides the snap ring reset tool free of charge so the snap ring can be seated in the intended groove.

What is the safety risk?

The safety risk is an unexpected loss of suspension air bag pressure while driving. That loss can abruptly reduce suspension height and increase crash risk. Air bag pressure loss during servicing also increases injury risk for maintenance personnel, so confirm the VIN and arrange the Gillig inspection and reset-tool remedy.
