2016-2017 Proline Cargo Trailer Recall 17V248: Wheel Nuts

Recall 17V248 covers 54 2016-2017 Proline Cargo Trailer units for short acorn wheel nuts. Repair is free at any franchised Proline dealer.

Proline is recalling 54 of its 2016-2017 Cargo Trailer models because the acorn wheel nuts on 3500lb-capacity galvanized Dexter Torflex axles are too short. If the wheels loosen or detach during use, crash risk increases, and Proline dealers will complete the recall repair free of charge.

What's wrong?

The wheel nuts on a 2016-2017 Proline Cargo Trailer clamp each wheel to the hub. On trailers with the galvanized Dexter Torflex axle setup, the acorn style nut has to tighten fully against the wheel so the wheel stays flat and secure while the trailer is moving.

On affected trailers, the wheel studs on the galvanized axle are longer than the acorn nuts were designed to accept. The nut reaches its closed end before it fully clamps the wheel. That leaves the wheel looking tight at pickup, but not held firmly enough under road vibration. As the trailer moves, the wheel can wobble, loosen the nuts, and separate from the trailer.

Owners can notice missing or loose lug nuts before the wheel comes off. A small gap between a wheel nut and the wheel is also a warning sign that the nut has bottomed out before clamping the wheel correctly.

Who's affected?

Scope spans the 2016 and 2017 Cargo Trailer model years, both tied to the same wheel hardware.

Field incidentsNHTSA has logged no field incidents to date.

The year and model narrow the scope, but the VIN decides. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific trailer is included.

What's the safety risk?

Loose or missing lug nuts let trailer wheels loosen or detach, increasing the risk of a crash. Check for missing or loose lug nuts before towing. If you see one, stop towing and call the dealer before moving the trailer again. Repair is free at any franchised Proline dealer.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2016-2017 Proline Cargo Trailer is included in this recall.
  2. Contact a franchised Proline dealer to schedule the free acorn wheel nut replacement that secures the wheels to the hubs.
  3. Bring the recall notice if Proline sent one. If not, reference recall number 17V248 when you call.
  4. Tow cautiously until the repair is complete, and stop using the trailer if a wheel feels loose or moves abnormally.

What happens at the repair

At the dealer, a Proline technician replaces the short acorn wheel nuts that secure the trailer wheels to the hub. The replacement wheel nuts and installation are free under the recall. If you already paid to fix this wheel nut issue before the recall notice, Proline will reimburse the repair after you present an itemized bill. Keep the invoice or work order with your trailer records and ask the service desk how to submit it to Proline.
