2017 Newmar King Aire Recall 17V229: Headlight Seal

Recall 17V229 affects 26 2017 Newmar King Aire motorhomes for headlight harness connector seals that allow water to disrupt dash displays. Newmar dealers repair free.

Newmar is recalling 26 2017 King Aire motorhomes because poorly seated headlight harness connector seals can let water into the connector. What's wrong?

On the 2017 Newmar King Aire, the headlight harness carries power and signal wiring for the front lighting. Its 6 position connectors join sections of that wiring, with seals at the wire entry and between the mating connector halves. Those seals are supposed to keep water out so the lighting circuits stay separated from the dash display controls.

On affected motorhomes, the connector seals were not seated correctly. Water can enter the connector and let current feed back between the turn signal and running light circuits. That electrical back feed can make the glass dash switch into turn signal camera mode and place the side camera view over the speedometer and RPM displays.

There is no warning sign before failure. The first sign is the dash display changing modes and covering the speedometer and RPM information while the motorhome is in use.

Field incidentsNHTSA has logged no field incidents to date.

Not every 2017 Newmar King Aire is on the list. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific motorhome is included.

What's the safety risk?

An unreadable speedometer or RPM display leaves the driver without key speed and engine information, which increases crash risk. There is no separate warning sign before the display problem appears. If either display is blank or unreadable, slow down, stop safely, and arrange dealer service before further travel. Repair will be free at any franchised Newmar dealer once available.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2017 Newmar King Aire is included in this recall.
  2. Wait for Newmar repair instructions before scheduling the dealer visit; owner notices were mailed on April 21, 2017.
  3. Call Newmar customer service at 1-800-731-8300 with questions and reference recall number 17V229.
  4. Keep the headlight-harness connector issue in mind before driving in heavy rain; water in the connector can switch the dash display to the turn signal camera view over the speedometer and RPM displays.
  5. Bring the recall notice to a franchised Newmar dealer once the inspection and seal-reseating repair is open for your VIN.

What happens at the repair

At the dealer, a Newmar technician inspects the headlight harness connector seals and reseats any seal that is not properly seated, so water cannot enter the connector. Since this campaign is not marked as an available remedy in the source data, the dealer repair will be free once Newmar opens it. Newmar has a general reimbursement plan on file for documented out of pocket repairs connected to this recall. Bring prior repair paperwork to the service desk and ask how the plan applies to your King Aire.

Frequently asked questions

What is recall 17V229?

Recall 17V229 covers 26 2017 Newmar King Aire motorhomes with headlight harness connector seals that were not seated correctly. Water can enter the connector and force the glass dash display into turn signal camera mode, blocking the speedometer and RPM displays. Newmar dealers inspect and reseat the seals for free.

What should I do if my 2017 Newmar King Aire is on this recall?

Check your VIN to confirm your specific motorhome is included in recall 17V229. If it is, contact a franchised Newmar dealer to schedule the headlight harness connector seal inspection. Reference recall number 17V229 when you call. The dealer repair is free.

Is the recall repair free?

Yes. Federal recall law requires the manufacturer to repair the defect at no cost. Newmar's filed remedy says dealers will inspect the headlight harness connector seals and reseat them as needed, free of charge.

What is the safety risk?

The safety risk is blocked driver information on the glass dash display. If the display switches to the turn signal side camera view, the driver loses the speedometer and RPM displays, which increases crash risk. The free dealer inspection addresses the connector seal problem.
