What's wrong?
The spare wheel on a 2017 Jayco Fifth Wheel Designer trailer is supposed to fit over the brake assembly when it replaces a road wheel. On trailers with the disk brake option, the brake caliper sits at the wheel and squeezes the rotor to slow the trailer. The rim must clear that caliper as the wheel turns.
The problem is the steel rim used for the spare. Its inside surface does not have enough clearance from the disc brake caliper. When the spare is mounted, the caliper rubs the inside of the rim instead of leaving a gap. That interference can keep the wheel from rotating as designed.
The warning sign is direct: after the spare is placed on the fifth wheel, the tire does not turn. That means the spare rim is contacting the caliper and the trailer should not be moved on that spare until the wheel fitment is corrected.

What's the safety risk?
If the spare wheel interferes with the fifth wheel, heat can build up and the tire can fail, increasing the risk of a crash. When the spare is installed, a tire that does not turn is a warning sign. Stop using that spare setup and schedule the recall repair soon. Repair is free at any franchised Jayco Fifth Wheel dealer.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2017 Jayco Fifth Wheel Designer is included in this recall.
- Contact a franchised Jayco Fifth Wheel dealer to schedule the free spare-wheel replacement that keeps the steel rim from rubbing the brake caliper.
- Bring the recall notice if Jayco has mailed one. If not, reference recall number 17V167 when you call.
- Avoid using the steel-rim spare before the repair; brake-caliper contact can overheat the tire and cause tire failure.
What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a Jayco Fifth Wheel technician replaces the spare wheel that has the steel rim and installs a new spare with an aluminum rim so the spare no longer rubs against the brake caliper. The replacement parts and labor are free under the recall. Jayco's general reimbursement plan covers documented, related out-of-pocket repairs paid before the recall notice. If you've paid for this repair, bring your paperwork to the service desk and ask how to submit it under Jayco's plan.
