BMW is recalling 8,752 2011-2012 335I, Z4, and other BMW models under recall 17V067 because the rear driveshaft CV joint can fatigue and break. A broken joint can cause loss of propulsion and increase crash risk; the BMW dealer repair will be free once available.

What's wrong?
The rear driveshaft constant velocity (CV) joint on these 2011-2012 BMW vehicles sits in the driveline between the transmission path and the rear wheels. It lets the driveshaft transfer engine power while handling angle changes as the rear suspension moves. The joint has to stay tight under repeated load every time the car accelerates or slows.
On affected vehicles, the CV joint was built with rivet connections that do not have enough fatigue strength. Repeated driveline load can weaken those rivets until the joint breaks. If that happens, the driveshaft can no longer pass power smoothly through the rear driveline, and the recall repair addresses that failed joint.
Before failure, the driver will first hear noise from the area of the CV joint. Over time, that noise gets louder and vibration increases, which are the warning signs BMW identified for this defect.

What's the safety risk?
A CV joint failure can leave the vehicle without propulsion and increase crash risk. Noise near the CV joint is the first sign, followed by stronger noise and vibration over time. Treat those symptoms as a reason to schedule service soon and avoid long trips until inspected. Repair will be free at any franchised BMW dealer once available.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2011-2012 BMW 335I, Z4, 335D, 535I, 135I, 740LI, 740I, 550I Gran Turismo, 535I Gran Turismo, or 1 Series M is included in this recall.
- Wait for BMW's owner notice if you have not received one, then keep it with your service paperwork.
- Contact a franchised BMW dealer and ask for the rear driveshaft CV joint inspection and free replacement if the joint's production date requires it.
- Reference recall number 17V067 when you call the dealer.
- Drive cautiously until the inspection is complete, and pull over safely if the vehicle loses propulsion.
What happens at the repair
BMW has identified the dealer repair for the rear driveshaft CV joint. At the dealer, a BMW technician will inspect the CV joint and check its production date. If the part is included, the technician will replace it. The dealer repair will be free once available, with parts and labor covered under the recall. BMW has a general reimbursement plan on file. If you already paid for a related rear driveshaft CV joint repair, contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 and ask how to submit documentation under that plan.
