What's wrong?
The steering bevel gear box in these Van Hool motorcoaches helps transfer steering-wheel movement through the steering system so the driver can turn the coach. On affected 2010-2017 C2045, T2145, TX40, TX45, TD925, CX45, and T2140 models, that box has to move smoothly even when the coach is started in cold weather.
The problem is inside the first-generation Pailton bevel gear box. Its grease is not suited for very low temperatures below -20°C/-4°F, so cold starts create extra friction in the steering gear. Water also entered through the sealing, contaminated the grease, and corroded the bearings. That corrosion adds resistance, so the driver has to use more manual force to turn the steering wheel.
The warning sign is stiff steering, especially when the coach is started in low temperatures. If the steering wheel feels unusually hard to turn, that is the signal to have the bevel gear box examined and replaced.
Who's affected?

What happens at the repair
