2014 Pratt DC432LS9/DC432LS9HL Recall 17V041: Axle

Recall 17V041 affects 126 2014 Pratt DC432LS9 and DC432LS9HL ISO Tank Chassis for axle spindles that let wheel ends separate. Repair will be free.

Pratt is recalling 126 2014 DC432LS9 Iso Tank Chassis and DC432LS9HL Iso Tank Chass chassis equipped with SAF-Holland 5-Inch Tapered Axles because out-of-specification spindle material thickness can let the wheel end separate from the axle. The defect increases crash risk, and the Pratt dealer repair will be free once Pratt makes it available.

What's wrong?

The rear axle spindle on the 2014 Pratt DC432LS9 Iso Tank Chassis and DC432LS9HL Iso Tank Chass is the machined end of the axle where the wheel hub and bearings ride. On the SAF-Holland 5-Inch tapered axle, that spindle supports the wheel end and carries the load while the chassis rolls.

On the recalled chassis, the spindle wall was made thinner than SAF-Holland's specification required. That out-of-specification material thickness leaves the spindle without the intended strength. If the spindle fails, the wheel end can separate from the axle instead of staying secured to the suspension.

Pratt's filing says failure can occur without warning. There is no warning sign before failure, so an owner or driver is not given a noise, light, or handling change to rely on before the wheel end separates.

Who's affected?

Covers both Pratt ISO tank chassis variants listed below, with the same rear suspension component.

A matching year and model does not confirm inclusion. Check your VIN to confirm whether this recall applies to your specific trailer.

What's the safety risk?

A wheel end separation can make the chassis harder to control and increase the risk of a crash. Failure can occur without warning, so schedule the inspection as soon as your VIN is confirmed. Repair will be free at any franchised Pratt dealer once available.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2014 Pratt DC432LS9 Iso Tank Chassis or DC432LS9HL Iso Tank Chass is included in this recall.
  2. Watch for Pratt's owner notice dated March 14, 2017, or call Pratt customer service if you never received it.
  3. Ask Pratt whether your chassis needs the axle inspection that identifies out-of-spec spindle material thickness before the wheel end separates.
  4. Reference recall number 17V041 when you call Pratt or speak with the dealer.
  5. Avoid loaded transport until Pratt confirms the axle inspection and any spindle replacement are complete.

What happens at the repair

Because the final remedy is still listed as under development, do not assume a Pratt dealer repair can be scheduled yet. Once the repair opens, a Pratt technician will inspect the axles and replace any defective spindles, free of charge. Parts and labor are covered under the recall. Pratt has a general reimbursement plan on file for this campaign. If you already paid for a related axle or spindle repair before the recall notice, contact Pratt customer service and ask what documentation is needed under that plan.

Frequently asked questions

What is recall 17V041?

Recall 17V041 covers 126 2014 Pratt DC432LS9 Iso Tank Chassis and DC432LS9HL Iso Tank Chass trailers equipped with SAF-Holland 5-Inch Tapered Axles. The wheel end can separate from the axle because the spindle material thickness is out of specification, increasing crash risk.

What should I do if my 2014 Pratt DC432LS9 Iso Tank Chassis or DC432LS9HL Iso Tank Chass is on this recall?

Check your VIN to confirm your specific chassis is included in recall 17V041. If it is, contact a Pratt dealer or Pratt customer service at 1-269-465-4646 to arrange axle inspection and spindle replacement. Reference recall 17V041 or Pratt recall EQ16-003 when you call.

Is the recall repair free?

Yes. Federal recall law requires manufacturers to repair safety defects at no cost, and Pratt dealers will inspect the axles and replace defective spindles free of charge. The repair applies to included vehicles regardless of where the chassis was purchased.

What is the safety risk?

The safety risk is wheel-end separation. If the wheel end separates from the axle, the chassis loses a critical wheel assembly and crash risk increases. Until your VIN is checked and the axle is inspected, use the recall number when asking Pratt or the dealer for guidance.
