What's wrong?
The rear door latch and lock cable in a 2015-2017 Nissan Altima connects the inside door hardware to the latch that keeps the rear door closed. When the cable is routed correctly, the latch stays secured while the window regulator raises and lowers the rear glass inside the door.
On affected Altimas, that cable was routed incorrectly during rear door trim panel installation. The misplaced cable can interfere with the window regulator as the rear window moves down. Lowering the rear window can then pull or disturb the latch cable enough to unlatch the rear door and let it open.
There is no warning sign before failure. An owner is not expected to hear a new noise or feel a change in the door before the window movement triggers the problem.
Who's affected?
One Altima body line spans the 2015, 2016, and 2017 model years, with the same door-latch component listed for each year.
| 2015 Nissan Altima | Latch |
|---|---|
| 2016 Nissan Altima | Latch |
| 2017 Nissan Altima | Latch |
| Units affected | 341,005 |
| Field incidents | NHTSA has logged 1 field incident to date. |
The year and model narrow the scope, but the VIN decides. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific sedan is included.
What's the safety risk?
If a rear passenger door opens while the Altima is moving, rear passengers face increased injury risk. Check that both rear doors are fully closed before driving, and schedule the latch and lock cable routing correction soon. Repair is free at any franchised Nissan dealer.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2015-2017 Nissan Altima is included in this recall.
- Contact a franchised Nissan dealer to schedule the free rear door latch/lock cable routing repair that keeps the rear door from unlatching when the window is lowered.
- Bring the recall notice if Nissan mailed one. If not, reference recall number 17V040 when you call.
- Avoid lowering the rear windows until the latch/lock cable routing repair is complete.
What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a Nissan technician checks the rear door latch and lock cable routing and corrects the routing so lowering a rear window does not pull the cable in a way that unlatches the door. The recall repair is free, with parts and labor covered. Out-of-pocket repairs already paid are handled through the existing warranty, not through a separate reimbursement program, because the affected Altima vehicles were still under warranty. Ask the service desk how warranty coverage applies if you have prior repair paperwork.

Frequently asked questions
What is recall 17V040?
Recall 17V040 covers 341,005 2015-2017 Nissan Altima vehicles with rear door latch/lock cables that were routed incorrectly. Lowering a rear window can cause that rear door to unlatch and open. Nissan dealers will correct the cable routing for free.
What should I do if my 2015-2017 Nissan Altima is on this recall?
Check your VIN to confirm your specific Altima is included in recall 17V040. If it is, contact a franchised Nissan dealer to schedule the rear door latch/lock cable routing repair. Reference recall number 17V040 when you call. The repair is free.
Is the recall repair free?
Yes. Federal recall law requires the manufacturer to repair the defect at no cost, and Nissan will correct the rear door latch/lock cable routing free of charge at any franchised Nissan dealer.
What is the safety risk for this Nissan Altima recall?
The safety risk is that a rear passenger door can unlatch and open while the vehicle is moving. That increases the risk of injury to rear passengers. Until the repair is complete, avoid lowering the rear windows and schedule the dealer repair.
What if I bought my Nissan Altima used?
The free recall repair still applies. Recall eligibility follows the VIN, not the original owner. If you bought the Altima used or never received Nissan's owner letter, check your VIN and reference recall number 17V040 when you call a Nissan dealer.
