What's wrong?
The passenger front air bag module in these 2005-2009 Audi A4, A6, S6, S4, and RS 4 vehicles contains an inflator. In a crash that requires the front air bags, the inflator is supposed to create gas quickly enough to fill the passenger air bag and help cushion the occupant.
The problem is inside certain inflators. The propellant wafers can break down after long-term exposure to high humidity, high heat, and repeated temperature changes. If the air bag deploys, that damaged propellant can burn too forcefully, creating pressure high enough to rupture the inflator body instead of filling the bag as designed.
There is no warning sign before failure. The inflator sits inside the air bag module, so an owner will not feel, hear, or see this problem during normal driving.
