What's wrong?

The passenger frontal air bag inflator is the part inside the passenger air bag module that fills the air bag during a crash. In affected Lincoln vehicles, the module is designed to cushion the front passenger after sensors call for deployment, and the inflator has to build pressure in a controlled way.

The problem is inside certain Takata inflators that use non-desiccated ammonium nitrate propellant. That propellant breaks down after long exposure to heat, humidity, and temperature changes. When the passenger air bag deploys in a crash, degraded propellant can make the inflator rupture instead of filling the air bag as designed.

There is no warning sign before failure. The air bag light, normal driving feel, and the look of the dashboard do not tell you whether this inflator has degraded.

The scope crosses cars, SUVs, and pickups using the same front air bag component.

What's the safety risk?

An air bag inflator rupture can send metal fragments into occupants, causing serious injury or death. Do not drive, including short trips, until the repair is complete. If the vehicle must move, ask the dealer about towing. Repair will be free at any franchised Lincoln dealer once Lincoln opens it.

What should I do?

  2. Do not drive the vehicle until the passenger frontal air bag inflator repair is complete.

  4. Contact a franchised Lincoln dealer and ask when the free passenger air bag inflator replacement is open for your VIN.
  5. Bring the recall notice if you have one, and reference recall number 17V024 when you call.
  6. Call Lincoln customer service at 1-866-436-7332 with questions about interim instructions or owner notices.

What happens at the repair

Do not drive the vehicle until the recall repair is complete. Because this campaign is still in interim status, Lincoln is notifying owners first and will send another notice when replacement parts are available. Once the final repair opens, a Lincoln technician will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator free of charge. Parts and labor are covered. The manufacturer's standard reimbursement plan is on file, so documented owner paid repairs tied to this inflator issue can be reviewed under that plan. Keep prior repair paperwork for the service desk.
