Recall 17V015 covers 8,711 Land Rover Range Rover vehicles with passenger air bag inflators. Free repair at any franchised Land Rover dealer once available.

Land Rover is recalling 8,711 2007, 2008, 2009, 2012 Range Rover SUVs because the passenger frontal air bag inflator can rupture after long-term humidity and temperature cycling. Metal fragments can strike occupants and cause serious injury or death, so the Land Rover dealer repair will be free once available.

What's wrong?

The passenger frontal air bag inflator in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2012 Land Rover Range Rover vehicles is the metal device inside the air bag module that creates the gas for deployment. In a crash that deploys the passenger air bag, the inflator is supposed to fill the bag quickly and stay contained inside the module.

These Range Rovers use certain Takata non-desiccated inflators with ammonium nitrate propellant. "Desiccated" means dried with a moisture-control material; these inflators do not have that drying protection. After long exposure to humidity and temperature cycling, the propellant breaks down. During deployment, that degraded propellant can burn too aggressively and rupture the inflator, sending metal fragments into the cabin instead of containing the pressure inside the air bag module.

There is no warning sign before failure. The air bag warning light does not have to turn on, and normal driving does not show whether the inflator propellant has degraded.

Who's affected?

Spans four Range Rover model years, with the 2012 SUVs from a later manufacturing period than the 2007, 2008, and 2009 SUVs.

A matching year and model does not guarantee inclusion. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific SUV is included.

What's the safety risk?

An inflator rupture can send metal fragments into the cabin, striking occupants and causing serious injury or death. Confirm the VIN, avoid delaying the recall appointment, and ask the dealer when the passenger air bag repair opens. Repair will be free at any franchised Land Rover dealer once available.
