What's wrong?
The passenger frontal air bag inflator is the pressure device inside the air bag module. In a crash that calls for the passenger air bag, the inflator burns propellant to fill the bag fast enough to cushion the occupant. On the affected 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2012 Lexus vehicles, the inflator is a Takata PSPI-6 unit.
The problem is inside the inflator. Its propellant is non-desiccated phase stabilized ammonium nitrate, which means it lacks a drying agent that helps control moisture. After prolonged exposure to high humidity, high temperatures, and temperature cycling, the propellant degrades.
