What's wrong?
On the 2017 INFINITI QX30, the passenger frontal air bag uses an inflator to fill the air bag during a crash. Inside that inflator, an initiator is the small ignition device that starts the chemical reaction. That reaction creates gas quickly enough to deploy the air bag between the passenger and the front of the cabin.
In the affected QX30 vehicles, the inflator initiator was built with the wrong generant mix. The generant is the material that ignites inside the inflator. With the mix out of ratio, the initiator can fail to ignite when the crash sensors command deployment, so the passenger frontal air bag does not deploy as designed.
An owner will not see this problem during normal driving. There is no warning sign before failure. The defect shows up only when the air bag is needed, which is why the part has to be replaced with an inflator initiator that has the correct generant ratio.

What's the safety risk?
If the passenger air bag fails to deploy during a crash, the front passenger has a higher risk of injury. Until the repair is complete, avoid seating a passenger in that seat when another seating position is available. If your VIN is included, schedule the repair soon. Repair is free at any franchised INFINITI dealer.

What happens at the repair
At the dealer, an INFINITI technician replaces the passenger air bag assembly covered by recall 16V939. The repair is available now, and the replacement parts and labor are free under the recall. Out-of-pocket repairs already paid are handled through the existing warranty, not through a separate reimbursement program, because the affected vehicles are under warranty. If you have prior repair paperwork, ask the service desk how warranty coverage applies.
