Jayco is recalling 680 2016 Precept and Alante motorhomes because incorrectly installed entrance-step wiring can make the steps retract on their own. What's wrong?
The entrance step on the 2016 Jayco Precept and Alante is the powered step at the doorway. Its wiring tells the step when to extend or retract as the door is used. When that wiring is routed correctly, it passes through a hole 1-2 inches above the floor and through the sidewall of the motorhome.
On affected motorhomes, the step wiring is routed under the door threshold instead. That puts the wires against an edge that can pinch or cut them as the doorway area moves and flexes. If the insulation is cut, the wire can make a ground connection. That ground connection activates the step and makes it retract on its own.
There is no warning sign before failure. The step can retract without a prior light, sound, or change in operation that gives the owner time to react.
Who's affected?
Covers the Precept and Alante lines from the same model year, with wiring as the shared component.

A matching year and model does not guarantee inclusion. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific motorhome is included.
What's the safety risk?
If the entrance steps retract on their own while someone is entering or exiting the motorhome, that person can fall and be injured. Use extra care around the steps and schedule service so the wiring can be inspected and corrected. Repair is free at any franchised Jayco dealer.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2016 Jayco Precept or Alante is included in this recall.
- Contact a franchised Jayco dealer to schedule the free entrance-step wiring inspection that fixes wiring linked to unexpected step retraction.
- Bring the recall notice if Jayco mailed one, and reference recall number 16V905 when you call.
- Use extra care entering and exiting the motorhome until the dealer completes the repair.
What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a Jayco technician inspects the entrance step wiring and corrects the wiring so the steps do not retract unexpectedly. The recall repair is free, including parts and labor tied to the wiring correction. If you already paid for an entrance step wiring repair before the recall work, Jayco's standard reimbursement plan covers documented expenses. Bring the repair invoice and payment record to the service desk, or contact Jayco customer service to ask how to submit the claim.
