Recall 16V802 covers 1,844 2017 XT5 and Acadia vehicles for leaking front brake calipers. Repair is free at any franchised Cadillac dealer.

Cadillac recall 16V802 covers 1,844 2017 XT5 and Acadia vehicles because the front brake caliper piston seal can be torn or misaligned, allowing brake fluid to leak. If fluid leaks, braking performance can be reduced and crash risk increases; Cadillac dealers will inspect and repair the brake calipers free of charge.

RecallNotify doesn't check your VIN — NHTSA's official tool does. We use your email only to alert you to new recalls.

What's wrong?

The front brake caliper on the 2017 XT5 and Acadia holds the brake pads at the wheel. When you press the brake pedal, hydraulic fluid pushes a piston inside the caliper, and the piston moves the pads against the rotor to slow the vehicle.

On affected vehicles, the front caliper piston bore was machined too large by the supplier. That bore is the opening the piston slides through, and the seal around the piston is supposed to stay compressed so brake fluid stays inside the caliper. With the bore oversized, the seal can move out of position between the piston and the bore. Once the seal is torn or misaligned, hydraulic brake fluid can leak from the front caliper.

The warning sign is the red "BRAKE" telltale light. It will illuminate when about 72% of the hydraulic brake fluid has leaked from the brake master cylinder reservoir, so treat that light as a brake-fluid warning and arrange dealer service.

Who's affected?

The XT5 and Acadia are included under the same hydraulic brake system component.

A matching year and model does not guarantee inclusion. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific SUV is included.

What's the safety risk?

If brake fluid leaks, braking performance drops and crash risk increases. A red BRAKE telltale light comes on after a large amount of hydraulic brake fluid has leaked from the master cylinder reservoir, so treat that light as a reason to stop and call the dealer. Repair is free at any franchised Cadillac dealer.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2017 Cadillac XT5 or GMC Acadia is included in this recall.
  2. Contact a franchised Cadillac dealer to schedule the free front brake caliper inspection and any needed caliper replacement, which fixes the brake-fluid leak risk.
  3. Bring the recall notice if Cadillac mailed one. If not, reference recall number 16V802 when you call.
  4. Drive cautiously until the repair is complete. Leave extra following distance and get brake-fluid leaks checked before driving farther.

What happens at the repair

At the dealer, a Cadillac technician inspects the front brake calipers for a torn or misaligned caliper piston seal and replaces the brake caliper assemblies as needed. The recall covers the inspection, replacement parts, and labor at no charge. Out of pocket repairs already paid are handled through the existing warranty, not through a separate reimbursement program, because all covered vehicles are under warranty. Ask the service desk how warranty coverage applies if you have prior repair paperwork.
