What's wrong?
The panoramic sunroof on affected 2015-2016 Hyundai Sonata and Sonata Hybrid vehicles uses a movable tempered glass panel and a wind deflector at the front edge of the opening. The deflector helps control air movement and reduce wind noise in the passenger compartment when the sunroof is open.
On these vehicles, the wind deflector anchor plate was not bonded strongly enough on certain assemblies. After the sunroof is opened, the deflector can loosen and shift from its mounting points. When the sunroof is closing, that loose deflector can interfere with the moving glass panel. The glass panel can detach from the sunroof assembly during driving, especially if the panel is forced closed against the obstruction.
Owners can notice more wind noise from the sunroof area if the deflector has come loose. Another warning sign is a sunroof that does not fully close.
Who's affected?
Sonata and Sonata Hybrid span the 2015 and 2016 model years; both use the same sun/moon roof assembly component.

The year and model narrow the scope, but the VIN decides. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific sedan is included.
What's the safety risk?
If the sunroof detaches, it can become a road hazard and increase crash risk. Increased wind noise from a loose wind deflector or a sunroof that will not fully close is a warning sign. Schedule the repair soon and avoid using the sunroof until the dealer checks it. Repair is free at any franchised Hyundai dealer.

What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a Hyundai technician repairs the wind deflector anchor plate for the panoramic sunroof. The recall repair is free, including parts and labor. This work addresses the bonding issue that lets the sunroof wind deflector loosen from the sunroof assembly. Hyundai has a general reimbursement plan on file for this campaign. If you have already paid for a related sunroof wind deflector repair, bring repair invoices and payment records to the service desk and ask Hyundai customer service how to submit the claim.

Yes. Federal recall law requires manufacturers to repair safety defects at no cost, and Hyundai dealers will repair the sunroof wind deflector anchor plate free of charge. Hyundai began this recall repair in December 2016.
