What's wrong?
The power steering pump on 2010-2017 Spartan K3, Gladiator, and Metrostar chassis supplies hydraulic pressure for steering assist. That assist reduces the force the driver needs at the wheel, especially at low speed, during tight turns, or when positioning an emergency response chassis or motor home chassis.
On affected vehicles, the TRW pump can lose output power intermittently. Spartan traced the issue to a spool bore inside the pump that was not sized correctly during production. The qualifying gauge was reading the bore from the wrong location, and a worn pin gauge allowed pumps outside specification to pass inspection. When pump output drops, the steering system still has a mechanical connection, but the assist is reduced or comes and goes.
There is no warning sign before failure. The first thing an owner or driver notices can be heavier steering effort or power assist that drops out while turning.
