2015 Zero Sr/S/Ds/Fx Recall 16V610: ABS Power Loss

Recall 16V610 affects 96 2015 Zero Sr, S, Ds, and Fx motorcycles for DC-DC converter power loss. Repair is free at any franchised Zero dealer.

Zero is recalling 96 2015 Sr, S, Ds, and Fx motorcycles because the DC-DC converter can lack enough output power under high demand. During an ABS-activated stop, the ABS and all vehicle lights can temporarily stop working, which increases crash risk; Zero dealers will complete the free repair.

What's wrong?

The DC-DC converter on these 2015 Zero Sr, S, Ds, and Fx motorcycles changes main battery power into lower-voltage power for accessories and safety systems. It helps feed items such as lighting, the accessory outlet, and the anti-lock brake system, which reduces wheel lockup during hard braking.

On affected motorcycles, the converter does not have enough output margin under a heavy electrical load. If the accessory outlet is using most of its power capacity while the high beam, indicator lights, and brake light are on, an ABS braking event can overload the converter. The converter can shut off temporarily, so the ABS does not function properly during that braking event.

The suspect converter has open slots on one side of its mounting bracket. The replacement converter comes from a different supplier and has enough power output margin for the motorcycle's electrical demand. There is no warning sign before failure.

Who's affected?

The Sr, S, Ds, and Fx all include the same affected systems: exterior lighting, electrical system, and hydraulic brake system.

2015 Zero S Exterior lighting

Field incidentsNHTSA has logged no field incidents to date.

A matching year and model does not guarantee inclusion. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific motorcycle is included.

What's the safety risk?

If the DC-DC converter cannot supply enough power during an ABS activation, the ABS and all vehicle lights would temporarily stop working, increasing crash risk. There is no warning sign before this happens, so treat the recall as a service priority and schedule the inspection soon. Repair is free at any franchised Zero dealer.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2015 Zero Sr, S, Ds, or Fx motorcycle is included in this recall.
  2. Contact a franchised Zero dealer to schedule the free DC-DC converter inspection and replacement that keeps ABS and lights powered during high power demand.
  3. Bring the recall notice if Zero has mailed one. If not, reference recall number 16V610 and Zero recall SV-ZMC-016-356 when you call.
  4. Ride cautiously until the repair is complete. Leave extra following distance and avoid hard braking when traffic allows.

What happens at the repair

At the dealer, a Zero technician inspects the DC-DC converters and replaces converters of the recalled type as needed. The inspection, replacement parts, and labor are free under recall 16V610. Zero has a general reimbursement plan on file for owners who already paid for a related DC-DC converter repair before the recall work. Keep repair paperwork and contact Zero customer service at 1-888-841-8085 to ask how to submit documentation under that plan.

Frequently asked questions

What is recall 16V610?

Recall 16V610 covers 96 2015 Zero Sr, S, Ds, and Fx motorcycles with a DC-DC converter that can have insufficient output power. When ABS activates, the ABS and all vehicle lights can temporarily stop working, increasing crash risk. Zero dealers inspect the converter and replace the affected type for free.

What should I do if my 2015 Zero Sr, S, Ds, or Fx is on this recall?

Check your VIN to confirm your specific motorcycle is included in recall 16V610. If it is, contact a franchised Zero dealer to schedule the DC-DC converter inspection. Reference recall number 16V610 or Zero recall number SV-ZMC-016-356 when you call. The repair is free.

Does the recall repair cost anything?

No. Federal recall law requires manufacturers to perform recall repairs at no cost, and Zero's remedy says dealers will inspect the DC-DC converter and replace the affected type free of charge. Zero customer service is available at 1-888-841-8085.

What is the safety risk in recall 16V610?

The safety risk is temporary loss of ABS function and vehicle lighting during an ABS activation. NHTSA campaign 16V610 says that loss increases crash risk. Zero's repair path is a dealer inspection of the DC-DC converter, with replacement of the affected type at no charge.

What if I bought my Zero motorcycle used?

The free recall repair still applies. Federal recall law follows the vehicle, not the first owner. Check your VIN to confirm whether your 2015 Zero Sr, S, Ds, or Fx is included, then contact a franchised Zero dealer and reference recall 16V610.
