What's wrong?
The CVT in the 2015-2016 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, Outlander, and Lancer uses a range switch to tell the transmission control computer which gear position the shifter is in. In drive, that signal lets the CVT and engine computer manage power while the metal belt inside the transmission changes ratios. The system depends on a steady drive signal.
On affected vehicles, the range switch can lose that signal for a moment because contact pressure drops between two electrical terminals inside the switch. When that happens with the throttle open, the CVT-ECU reads it like a shift from neutral to drive. To prevent shift shock and belt slip, it tells the engine computer to reduce torque, so the vehicle hesitates instead of accelerating normally.
There is no warning sign before failure. The issue shows up as a delay or hesitation when you press the accelerator under the driving conditions that trigger the signal loss.
