2014-2016 Kidron Trailers Recall 16V505: SR-5 Valve

Kidron is recalling 360 2014-2016 Refrigerated Trailer and Beverage Trailer units for delayed spring-brake application. The SR-5 valve replacement is free.

Kidron is recalling 360 trailers from the 2014-2016 Refrigerated Trailer and Beverage Trailer lines because certain Bendix SR-5 spring brake valves were improperly machined, delaying spring brake application while parking. A delayed brake application can let a decoupled trailer roll away, increasing crash or injury risk; the Kidron dealer repair is free.

What's wrong?

The Bendix SR-5 spring brake valve on the 2014-2016 Kidron Refrigerated Trailer and Beverage Trailer trailers controls air for the spring parking brakes. During normal parking, the valve routes air so the spring brakes apply and hold the trailer after the tractor is set to park or disconnect. The valve has an internal check valve seat that helps control that air path.

On affected trailers, the valve body was machined without the required radius on that internal seat. Bendix traced the problem to a revised supplier drawing that left out that detail. Without the correct shape, the valve can delay spring brake application while the trailer is being parked.

The slow-to-park condition can happen without warning. Before the tractor is decoupled, an affected trailer has an audible air leak from the dash-mounted park control valve or from the red glad hand, the red air-line connector. The leak continues until the trailer reservoirs and spring brake chambers lose air pressure.

Who's affected?

Covers two trailer models across the 2014, 2015, and 2016 model years, all tied to the parking brake.

Field incidentsNHTSA has logged no field incidents to date.

A matching year and model does not guarantee inclusion. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific trailer is included.

What's the safety risk?

A delayed spring brake application can let the trailer roll after it decouples from the tractor, increasing the risk of a crash or injury. An audible air leak at the dash mounted park control valve or red glad hand is a warning sign. Keep the trailer secured and schedule the repair soon. Repair is free at any franchised Kidron dealer.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2014-2016 Kidron Refrigerated Trailer or Beverage Trailer is included in this recall.
  2. Contact a franchised Kidron dealer to schedule the free SR-5 spring brake valve replacement that fixes delayed parking brake application.
  3. Bring the recall notice if you have it, and reference recall number 16V505 when you call.
  4. Secure the trailer before uncoupling until the repair is complete, since delayed spring brake application can let the trailer roll away.

What happens at the repair

At the dealer, a Kidron technician replaces any affected Bendix SR-5 spring brake valve with a Bendix replacement kit. The replacement kit, parts, and labor are free under the recall. Because the recall repair is available, schedule service through the Kidron dealer or service contact handling your trailer. Kidron has a general reimbursement plan on file for related out-of-pocket repairs paid before the recall notice. Bring documentation for the brake valve repair when you contact customer service or the service desk.
