2015-2016 Vermeer TR620/TR626 Recall 16V488: Brake Valve

Recall 16V488 affects 45 2015-2016 Vermeer TR620 and TR626 trailers for delayed spring brake application. Free repair at a franchised Vermeer dealer once available.

Vermeer is recalling 45 2015-2016 TR620 and TR626 trailers because Bendix SR5 spring brake valves can delay spring brake application while parking. A delay can let the trailer roll away after it decouples from the tractor, increasing crash or injury risk; the dealer repair will be free once Vermeer makes it available.

What's wrong?

The parking brake system on 2015-2016 Vermeer TR620 and TR626 trailers uses air pressure and a spring brake valve to control the spring brakes. The Bendix SR5 spring brake valve directs air so the brakes release for travel and apply when the trailer is parked. When the valve works correctly, the spring brakes apply promptly after the park control is set.

On affected trailers, the valve body was not machined correctly because a check valve seat radius was left out during a supplier change. That machining problem interferes with how the valve manages air inside the brake circuit. The result is a delay in spring brake application while parking, which is the defect described in recall 16V488.

Owners can listen for an audible air leak from the dash mounted park control valve. An air leak at the glad hand when it is disconnected is another warning sign.

Who's affected?

Includes both TR620 and TR626 models across the 2015 and 2016 model years, with the same parking brake component named for each.

The year and model narrow the scope, but the VIN decides. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific vehicle is included.

What's the safety risk?

A delayed spring brake application can let the trailer roll away after it decouples from the tractor, increasing the risk of a crash or injury. Treat an audible air leak from the dash mounted park control valve or disconnected glad hand as a warning sign. Repair will be free at any franchised Vermeer dealer once available.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2015-2016 Vermeer TR620 or TR626 trailer is included in this recall.
  2. Call Vermeer customer service at 1-641-628-3141 for repair-status instructions before scheduling service.
  3. Reference recall number 16V488 when you call or speak with a Vermeer dealer.
  4. Secure the trailer when parked until the spring brake valve repair is complete, because delayed parking brake application can let the trailer roll after it is decoupled.

What happens at the repair

Vermeer and Bendix will supply the needed parts and repair instructions for the Bendix SR5 spring brake valve. Once the final repair opens, a Vermeer technician will repair the spring brake valve so the parking brake applies as intended. Vermeer sent interim owner notices on August 19, 2016, while the remedy was not available. Because the remedy is still listed as under development, contact Vermeer Customer Service or your dealer for the repair status before arranging service. The final dealer repair will be free once available, with parts and labor covered under the recall.

Frequently asked questions

What is recall 16V488?

Recall 16V488 covers 45 2015-2016 Vermeer TR620 and TR626 trailers equipped with certain Bendix SR5 spring brake valves. Improper machining can delay spring brake application while parking, letting a decoupled trailer roll away and increasing crash or injury risk.

What should I do if my 2015-2016 Vermeer TR620 or TR626 is on this recall?

Check your VIN to confirm your specific trailer is included in recall 16V488. If it is, contact a franchised Vermeer dealer or Vermeer Customer Service at 1-641-628-3141 and reference recall VFK3104. Ask for the current spring brake valve repair instructions.

Is the recall repair free?

Yes. Federal recall law requires the manufacturer to repair the defect at no cost. Vermeer and Bendix will provide the needed parts and instructions for the spring brake valve repair, and dealers will be reimbursed for parts and labor.

What is the safety risk?

The risk is trailer rollaway after decoupling. If the spring brake applies late, the trailer can move after it is separated from the tractor, increasing the risk of a crash or injury. Secure the trailer according to Vermeer guidance until the repair is complete.

When did Vermeer notify owners?

Vermeer issued an interim owner notification on August 19, 2016 because the remedy was not available then. For current repair status, contact a franchised Vermeer dealer or Vermeer Customer Service at 1-641-628-3141 and reference recall VFK3104.
