Recall 16V474 covers 289 2014-2016 Cheetah chassis and flatbed trailers for delayed SR-5 spring brake application. Cheetah provides a free remedy kit.
Cheetah is recalling 289 2014-2016 Flatbed Trailer, Extendable Chassis, Bridgemaster Chassis, Curtainside Flatbed, Gooseneck Chassis, and Straight Frame Chassis trailers because certain Bendix SR5 spring brake valves can delay spring brake application while parking. A delayed spring brake application can let a trailer roll away after it is decoupled from the tractor, and the dealer repair will be free once Cheetah makes it available.

What's wrong?
The parking brake system on the 2014-2016 Cheetah trailers uses a Bendix SR5 spring brake valve to control the spring brakes when the trailer is parked. In normal operation, that valve releases air pressure so the spring brakes apply and hold the trailer in place after the parking brake is set. The valve is part of the system that turns a parking command into brake force at the wheels.
On the affected trailers, the SR5 valve was improperly machined. That machining problem can slow the valve's response, so the spring brakes do not apply as quickly as designed while parking. The issue is not with the driver's parking command; it is with the valve that carries out that command. That delay means the trailer is not held as quickly as expected after the parking brake is set.
There is no warning sign before failure. Do not rely on a sound, light, or control feel to tell you the spring brake valve is not applying on time.

What's the safety risk?
A delayed spring brake application can let a decoupled trailer roll away after separation from the tractor, increasing the risk of a crash or injury. Before moving or parking the trailer, confirm the brakes set as expected and schedule the repair. Repair will be free at any franchised Cheetah dealer once available.
