2016 Volkswagen 4-Model Recall 16V464: Child Locks

Recall 16V464 covers 5,658 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan, Golf R, Cc, and E-Golf vehicles for rear child-lock disengagement. Repair is free at franchised Volkswagen dealers.

Volkswagen is recalling 5,658 2016 Tiguan, Golf R, Cc, and E-Golf vehicles under recall 16V464 because vibration from opening and closing a door can disengage the rear child door locks. If an unrestrained child opens a rear door from inside the vehicle, the child can fall from the vehicle; Volkswagen dealers will complete the repair free of charge.

What's wrong?

The rear child door locks on the 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan, Golf R, Cc, and E-Golf are small mechanical locks built into the rear door latch area. When set, they keep the inside rear door handle from opening the door, so a child in the back seat cannot open that door from inside the vehicle.

On affected vehicles, the lock's internal position retaining mechanism was improperly molded. During early use, that retaining piece can fracture. Normal vibration, including the vibration from opening and closing a door, can then let the child lock slip out of its locked position and disengage.

An owner can notice that the child lock does not click or ratchet into its end position when being set. The lever also lacks the normal tactile feedback after the mechanism has fractured. If that happens, treat the child lock as unreliable until a Volkswagen dealer repairs it.

What's the safety risk?

An unrestrained child who unexpectedly opens a door faces a fall from the vehicle and injury. A broken child lock gives no tactile feedback and does not ratchet into its end position. Check the lock feel before carrying children, and schedule the inspection soon if it feels wrong. Repair is free at any franchised Volkswagen dealer.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan, Golf R, Cc, or E-Golf is included in this recall.
  2. Contact a franchised Volkswagen dealer to schedule the free rear child-lock inspection and replacement that keeps the rear door child locks from disengaging.
  3. Bring the recall notice if Volkswagen mailed one. Reference recall number 16V464 and Volkswagen recall 58C9 when you call.
  4. Call Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 with questions before your appointment.
  5. Keep children properly restrained and use extra caution with rear doors until the dealer repair is complete.

What happens at the repair

At the dealer, a Volkswagen technician inspects the rear child door locks and replaces any child lock that does not hold correctly. The inspection and replacement parts are free under the recall. Volkswagen has a general reimbursement plan on file for owners who already paid for a related child lock repair before the recall work. Bring documentation for that repair to the service desk and ask Volkswagen customer service how to submit it.
