Recall 16V453 covers 1,191 2017 International Prostar, Lonestar, Paystar, Hx, and 9900 trucks for ECM shorts. Free ECM replacement once available.
International is recalling 1,191 2017 Prostar, Lonestar, Paystar, Hx, and 9900 trucks equipped with Cummins ISX15L engines because the engine control module can short and blow a fuse. The engine can stall and fail to restart, which raises the risk of a crash; an International dealer repair will be free once International opens the remedy.

What's wrong?
The engine control module on 2017 International Prostar, Lonestar, Paystar, Hx, and 9900 trucks with the Cummins ISX15L engine is the engine's electronic controller. It reads sensor signals and sends commands that control fuel delivery, engine timing, and other running conditions. The fuse in its power supply protects that electrical circuit.
On affected trucks, wash water entered the module's connector area during engine assembly because defective masking caps did not seal the port during the wash and paint process. Water or residue inside the module can create an internal short on the printed circuit board. When that short blows the fuse feeding the module, the engine loses the controller it needs to keep running and can stall without restarting.
There is no warning sign before failure. The truck can run normally until the short happens and the fuse opens, so an owner is unlikely to get a warning light or drivability symptom first.

What's the safety risk?
An engine stall can leave the driver without power while moving and increase the risk of a crash. There is no warning sign before failure, so schedule the recall repair soon and treat any stall as a reason to stop in a safe place and call the dealer. Repair will be free at any franchised International dealer once available.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2017 International Prostar, Lonestar, Paystar, Hx, or 9900 is included in this recall.
- Wait for International or Cummins repair instructions before scheduling if the dealer says the remedy is not open for your VIN.
- Contact a franchised International dealer and reference recall number 16V453 when you call.
- Ask about the free ECM replacement that fixes the electrical short that can blow a fuse and stall the engine.
- Drive cautiously until the repair is complete, and move out of traffic safely if the engine stalls.
What happens at the repair
Once the dealer repair is available, an International technician will replace the engine control module that controls the Cummins ISX15L engine. The final dealer repair will be free under the recall, with parts and labor covered. Because a general reimbursement plan is on file, owners who already paid out of pocket for an ECM-related repair before the recall notice should ask International customer service or the dealer service desk how to submit documentation under the manufacturer's standard reimbursement plan.

What should I do if my 2017 International Prostar, Lonestar, Paystar, Hx, or 9900 is on this recall?
Check your VIN to confirm your specific truck is included in recall 16V453. If it is, contact an International dealer or Cummins customer service at 1-800-343-7357 to schedule the ECM replacement. Reference recall number 16V453 when you call.
