2014 Maserati Quattroporte, Ghibli Recall 16V424: Shifter

Recall 16V424 covers 12,631 2014 Maserati Quattroporte and Ghibli vehicles for confusing gear-position warnings. Repair will be free at franchised Maserati dealers once available.

Maserati is recalling 12,631 2014 Quattroporte and Ghibli vehicles because the monostable gear selector can make the transmission position unclear and fail to warn clearly when the driver's door opens while the vehicle is not in PARK. A driver who exits with the engine running and parking brake off can be struck and injured, and the Maserati dealer repair will be free once available.

What's wrong?

The gear selector in affected 2014 Maserati Quattroporte and Ghibli vehicles controls the eight-speed automatic transmission and shows the driver which range is selected, such as Park, Reverse, Neutral, or Drive. In normal use, that selector and the instrument cluster should make the selected gear clear before the driver opens the door or steps out.

In recall 16V424, the monostable selector returns to the same resting position after each shift instead of staying physically in the chosen gear position. Maserati found that this design can confuse the driver into thinking the transmission is in Park when it is still in a drive gear. If the driver exits while the vehicle is still in gear, the vehicle can move.

The vehicle has a door-ajar warning chime and an instrument-cluster warning when the transmission is not in Park. Those warnings are what you would notice before leaving the seat.

Who's affected?

Covers two Maserati sedans from the same model year, with scope split across gear-position indication and transmission-control components.

A matching year and model does not guarantee inclusion. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific sedan is included.

What's the safety risk?

A driver who believes the transmission is in PARK can be struck and injured after stepping out with the engine running and the parking brake off. The door chime and instrument cluster warning alert the driver when the vehicle is not in Park. Repair will be free at any franchised Maserati dealer once available.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2014 Maserati Quattroporte or Ghibli is included in this recall.
  2. Wait for Maserati's repair notice before scheduling the software update; the final dealer repair is free once Maserati opens it.
  3. Contact a franchised Maserati dealer after the repair notice arrives to schedule the software update that corrects the gear-selection warning problem.
  4. Reference recall number 16V424 and Maserati recall 307 when you call the dealer or Maserati customer service.
  5. Set the parking brake, confirm the transmission is in PARK, and keep the engine running only when you are staying in the vehicle.

What happens at the repair

Maserati mailed an interim owner notice on July 1, 2016, while the remedy software remained in development. Once the software is available, a Maserati technician will update the vehicle software at no charge. The update is meant to address the gear selector warning issue described in recall 16V424. Maserati has a general reimbursement plan on file, so owners who already paid for a related software or gear selector repair should ask Maserati customer service how to submit documentation for review.

Frequently asked questions

What is recall 16V424?

Recall 16V424 covers 12,631 2014 Maserati Quattroporte and Ghibli vehicles with an eight-speed automatic transmission and monostable gear selector. The selector can mislead the driver about the gear position and allow the driver to exit while the vehicle is still in gear.

What should I do if my 2014 Maserati Quattroporte or Ghibli is on this recall?

Check your VIN to confirm your specific vehicle is included in recall 16V424. If it is, contact a franchised Maserati dealer and reference recall number 16V424 or Maserati recall 307. The dealer software update is free once the remedy opens.

Is the recall repair free?

Yes. Maserati's recall remedy states that dealers will perform the software update free of charge. Federal recall law requires the manufacturer to repair the defect at no cost through a franchised Maserati dealer once the remedy is available.

Is it safe to drive my Maserati before the recall repair?

The recall record does not say to stop driving. The safety risk happens when the engine is running, the parking brake is not engaged, and the driver exits after believing the transmission is in PARK. Confirm PARK and set the parking brake before getting out.
