2015-2016 Fccc Xbp-Xcp Recall 16V366: Steering

Recall 16V366 affects 1,385 2015-2016 Fccc Xbr, Xcm, Xcr, Xbp, Xcp, and Xcl trucks. Do not drive. Free steering-box repair at franchised Fccc dealers.

Do not drive

The steering connection to the front axle can fail suddenly, causing loss of steering ability and increasing the risk of a crash. Do not drive the vehicle, even for short trips, until it has been inspected. Ask the dealer about towing if the vehicle has to move. Repair is free at any franchised Fccc dealer.

Fccc is recalling 1,385 2015-2016 Xbr, Xcm, Xcr, Xbp, Xcp, and Xcl trucks because Bosch 8018 steering boxes used incorrect internal spacers that cause premature wear between the steering wheel and front axle. Do not drive an included truck until an Fccc dealer completes the free repair, because the connection can fail and cause sudden loss of steering.

What's wrong?

The steering box on 2015-2016 Fccc Xbp, Xbr, Xcm, Xcr, Xcl, and Xcp chassis is the link between the steering wheel and the front wheels. It turns the driver's steering input into controlled movement at the front axle, so the vehicle points where the driver intends. These chassis used certain ZF RL77 / 80EM independent front steering axles with Bosch 8018 steering boxes.

On affected chassis, the Bosch steering boxes were built with incorrect internal spacers. Those spacers sit inside the steering gear and help keep internal parts aligned under load. When the spacer is wrong, the connection between the steering wheel and the front axle wears early. As that wear builds, steering input is no longer carried through as designed.

The filing does not identify a driver warning sign you can count on. There is no warning sign before failure.

What's the safety risk?

The steering connection to the front axle can fail suddenly, causing loss of steering ability and increasing the risk of a crash. Do not drive the vehicle, even for short trips, until it has been inspected. Ask the dealer about towing if the vehicle has to move. Repair is free at any franchised Fccc dealer.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2015-2016 Fccc Xbr, Xcm, Xcr, Xbp, Xcp, or Xcl is included in this recall.
  2. Do not drive the vehicle until a dealer has inspected the steering box.
  3. Arrange a tow if the vehicle has to be moved; do not drive it to the dealer yourself.
  4. Contact a franchised Fccc dealer to schedule the free steering-box inspection and replacement that addresses premature wear between the steering wheel and front axle.
  5. Bring the recall notice if DTNA mailed one. If not, reference recall number 16V366 and DTNA recall FL-712 when you call.

What happens at the repair

At the dealer, an Fccc technician inspects the steering box in the front steering system. If the inspection shows the Bosch steering box has the affected internal spacer condition or related wear, the dealer replaces the steering box. The inspection and any needed replacement are free under the recall. Do not drive the vehicle until that inspection is complete. If the vehicle has to move before inspection, ask the dealer about towing or another safe transport option.
