What's wrong?
The recalled part is the passenger frontal air bag inflator module in affected 2004-2012 Dodge vehicles. The inflator sits inside the passenger air bag assembly and creates the gas that fills the air bag during a crash. Its job is to deploy the passenger air bag quickly and in a controlled way.
The problem is inside the Takata inflator. Its propellant degrades after prolonged exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and temperature cycling. Once that material breaks down, the inflator no longer behaves as designed during a passenger air bag deployment. This recall is about the inflator itself, not the seat belt or the driver air bag.
There is no warning sign before failure. The defect is hidden inside the sealed inflator, so an owner does not get a dash light, sound, smell, or change in driving feel from the defect itself.
Who's affected?
The scope crosses pickups, SUVs, sedans, coupes, and wagons; every listed vehicle uses the same front passenger air bag component.
