Recall 16V311 affects 21,493 2011 BMW X5 and X6 vehicles for front driveshaft universal joint failure. Repair is free at any franchised BMW dealer.
BMW is recalling 21,493 2011 X5, X6, X5 Diesel Sav, and X6 Activehybrid Sac vehicles because the front driveshaft universal joint can let water and debris in and fail. If the joint breaks, the front wheels lose drive power and traction; BMW dealers will complete the free repair.

What's wrong?
On the 2011 BMW X5, X5 Diesel Sav, X6, and X6 Activehybrid Sac, the front driveshaft sends engine power to the front drivetrain. A universal joint in that driveshaft lets the shaft turn while the drivetrain moves with the suspension. A seal around the joint is supposed to keep water and road debris out.
In the affected vehicles, a manufacturing variation left the sealing ring contact face out of specification. That surface is where the seal needs to sit tightly. When the seal does not close properly, water and debris get into the universal joint and damage it over time. As the joint wears, the front driveshaft no longer turns smoothly and the joint can fail.
The first warning sign is noise from the front drivetrain area. Over time, that noise increases and vibration develops, which means the joint is getting worse.
Who's affected?
The scope separates X5 and X6 variants, with diesel and ActiveHybrid versions tied to the same driveline component.

What's the safety risk?
A failed front universal joint stops the front wheels from receiving power, which reduces traction and increases crash risk. Noise from the front drivetrain comes first, then vibration grows over time. If you hear that noise or feel new vibration, stop driving when safe and call a BMW dealer. Repair is free at any franchised BMW dealer.
What should I do?
- Check your VIN to confirm your 2011 BMW X6 Activehybrid Sac, X5 Diesel Sav, X5, or X6 is included in this recall.
- Contact a franchised BMW dealer to schedule the free front driveshaft replacement that fixes the water and debris damage risk at the universal joint.
- Bring the recall notice if BMW mailed one. If not, reference recall number 16V311 when you call.
- Drive cautiously until the repair is complete, and avoid continued driving if the front driveline feels damaged or traction changes.
What happens at the repair
At the dealer, a BMW technician replaces the front driveshaft, the part that carries power to the front wheels. The replacement parts and labor are free under the recall. BMW has a general reimbursement plan on file for owners who already paid for a related repair before the recall work was completed. Bring documentation for any front driveshaft or universal joint repair and ask the service desk how to submit it under BMW's reimbursement plan.
