2008-2015 Newmar Bay Star/Dutch Star Recall 16V008: Steps

Recall 16V008 covers 3,712 2008-2015 Newmar motorhomes for unstable electric entry steps. Repair is free at any franchised Newmar dealer.

Newmar is recalling 3,712 2008-2015 motorhomes, including Bay Star, Dutch Star, Ventana, and Canyon Star models, because bolts in certain Lippert Coachstep electric steps can fracture and let the fan gear assembly disengage. The entry steps can become unstable when people get in or out, increasing injury risk, and Newmar dealers will complete the free repair.

What's wrong?

The electric entrance steps on affected 2008-2015 Newmar Bay Star, Dutch Star, Ventana, Canyon Star, Bay Star Sport, Dutch Aire Dp, and Kountry Star Dp motorhomes are Coachstep double or triple steps supplied by Lippert Components. These steps extend and retract at the doorway so a person has a stable platform when getting in or out of the motorhome. A fan gear assembly inside the step mechanism helps hold and move that platform in the expected position.

The problem is the bolt that attaches the fan gear assembly to the steps. If that bolt fractures, the fan gear assembly can disengage from the step structure. Once that happens, the step platform is no longer held as designed, so it can shift or sit unstable when someone puts weight on it. The recall concern is a fall and injury while entering or exiting the motorhome.

There is no warning sign before failure. Treat any loose, uneven, or unstable step as a reason to stop using that step until a Newmar dealer inspects it.

What's the safety risk?

An unstable entry or exit step can move under a person's weight, increasing the risk of injury while entering or leaving the motorhome. Use the steps carefully and schedule the repair soon. Repair is free at any franchised Newmar dealer.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2008-2015 Newmar Bay Star, Dutch Star, Ventana, Canyon Star, Bay Star Sport, Dutch Aire Dp, or Kountry Star Dp is included in this recall.
  2. Contact your nearest franchised Newmar dealer to schedule the free retainer-bracket installation that reinforces the electric step operating mechanism.
  3. Bring any recall notice you received, and reference recall number 16V008 when you call.
  4. Use extra care entering and exiting until the repair is complete, and keep weight off any step that feels loose or unstable.
  5. Call Newmar customer service at 1-574-773-7791 with questions about scheduling or dealer instructions.

What happens at the repair

At the dealer, a Newmar technician installs a retainer bracket to reinforce the operating mechanism for the Coachstep electric steps. The bracket helps keep the step mechanism supported if the fan gear bolt fractures or loses engagement. The recall repair is free, with parts and labor covered. If you paid out of pocket for this Coachstep repair before the recall notice, contact Newmar customer service with receipts or repair documentation and ask how to file under its reimbursement plan.

Frequently asked questions

What is recall 16V008?

Recall 16V008 covers 3,712 2008-2015 Newmar motorhomes equipped with Coachstep Double and Triple Electric Steps. A step mechanism bolt can fracture, letting the gear disengage so the entry steps become unstable. Newmar dealers install a retainer bracket for free.

What should I do if my 2008-2015 Newmar Bay Star, Dutch Star, Ventana, Canyon Star, Bay Star Sport, Dutch Aire Dp, or Kountry Star Dp is on this recall?

Check your VIN to confirm your specific motorhome is included in recall 16V008. If it is, contact a franchised Newmar dealer to schedule the retainer bracket installation. Reference recall number 16V008 when you call. The repair is free.

Is the recall repair free?

Yes. Federal recall law requires the manufacturer to repair the defect at no cost, and Newmar's remedy says dealers will install the retainer bracket free of charge. Parts and labor are covered at a franchised Newmar dealer.

What is the safety risk?

The risk is injury while entering or exiting the motorhome. If the bolt fractures, the step gear can disengage and the steps can fail to stay in the expected position. Treat loose, shifting, or unstable entry steps as a safety issue until the repair is complete.

What if I bought my Newmar motorhome used?

The free recall repair still applies. Recall coverage follows the VIN, not the first owner. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific motorhome is included, then call a franchised Newmar dealer and reference recall 16V008 when scheduling the repair.
