2014-2015 Platinum Horse Trailer Recall 15V890: Water Heater

Recall 15V890 covers 3 2014-2015 Platinum Horse Trailer units with Atwood water heaters that overheat tap water. Free remedy kit at a franchised Platinum dealer.

Platinum is recalling 3 Atwood on-demand water heaters tied to 2014-2015 Horse Trailer trailers and dealer inventory because the gas valve can overheat water at the hot-water tap. Steam or overheated water can scald the operator and raise injury risk; Platinum dealers will complete the recall repair free of charge.

What's wrong?

The affected 2014-2015 Platinum Horse Trailer equipment uses an Atwood on-demand water heater tied into the trailer's LPG system. The heater's job is to warm water as it flows to the hot water tap, instead of storing a tank of hot water. A gas valve controls burner output so the water leaving the tap stays within the intended temperature range.

The defect is in the water-flow adjustment inside certain Atwood OD50, OD50CW, and OD45 water heaters. Atwood found that the poppet valve in that adjustment system shifted during transit or was set at the factory with water flow at .3gal/minute or less. At that low flow, the gas valve can let the heater overheat the water at the tap, creating a scald risk for the person using it.

The warning sign is water at the hot water tap that comes out hotter than expected, especially at very low flow. Treat that as a sign to stop using the hot water system until the recall repair is complete.

Who's affected?

Covers two Horse Trailer makes across the 2014 and 2015 model years, with the water heater listed as the affected component.

A matching trailer make, model, and year does not guarantee inclusion. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific trailer is included.

What's the safety risk?

Overheated water can release steam, scalding the operator and increasing the risk of injury. Treat unexpectedly hot water, steam, or unusual water heater behavior as a reason to stop using the heater and arrange the recall repair. Repair is free at any franchised Platinum dealer.

The recall repair is free, including parts and labor. A general reimbursement plan is on file for campaign 15V890.
