What's wrong?

The Atwood on demand water heater in the 2013 Showhauler Motorhome heats water as it moves through the unit, instead of storing hot water in a tank. Water and gas valves work together inside the heater: one controls flow through the unit, and the other controls the burner that heats that flow before it reaches the hot water tap.

On the affected Motorhome, the water flow adjustment in the poppet valve was set too low or shifted during transit. At .3 gal/minute or less, water moves through the heater too slowly. The burner keeps adding heat while the flow is restricted, so the water at the hot tap becomes hotter than intended and creates a scald risk.

There is no warning sign before failure. The tap, heater switch, and normal plumbing controls can look ordinary even when the valve setting lets the water overheat.
