What's wrong?

The Atwood on demand water heater in these 2012-2016 Coachmen recreational vehicles and toy haulers heats water only when a hot water tap is opened. In normal use, water moves through the heat exchanger while the gas burner adds heat. A water and gas valve controls that flow so the water heats without overheating at the tap.

The problem is in the water flow adjustment on the poppet valve inside the heater. That adjustment shifted during transit or was set too low at the factory. When flow is too low, too little water moves through the heat exchanger while the burner keeps heating. After the tap is shut off, water left in the tubing can keep heating and turn to steam.

The warning sign is hot steam coming from the hot-water side of the tap when it is opened. That steam means the heater has overheated the water in the supply tap and creates a scald risk for the person using it.

Field incidentsNHTSA has logged no field incidents to date.

The year and model narrow the scope, but the VIN decides. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific vehicle is included.

What's the safety risk?

Overheated water can release steam from the hot water side of the tap, scalding the person using it and increasing the risk of injury. If hot steam comes from the tap when opened, stop using that side and schedule service. Repair is free at any franchised Coachmen dealer.

What should I do?

  1. Check your VIN to confirm your 2012-2016 Coachmen Brookstone, Legacy, Shockwave, Work And Play, Xlr, Charleston, Berkshire, Continental Cargo, or Dynamax is included in this recall.
  2. Contact a franchised Coachmen dealer to schedule the free Atwood water-heater repair that helps prevent overheated tap water and steam scald risk.
  3. Bring the recall notice if Coachmen mailed one. If not, reference recall number 15V771 when you call.
  4. Avoid using the hot-water system until the repair is complete if the water feels hotter than expected or releases steam.
  5. Call Coachmen customer service at 1-800-348-7440 with questions about scheduling or owner instructions.

What happens at the repair

At the dealer, a Coachmen technician inspects the Atwood on demand water heater, installs a water-flow stop key so the setting cannot drop below .5 gal/min, adds a star or lock washer to secure the adjustment screw, and applies a warning and tamper-proof label over the stop key and screw. The recall repair, including parts and labor, is free. Coachmen has a general reimbursement plan on file for owners who already paid for this related repair. Bring documentation for any prior repair to the service desk and ask how to submit it under that plan.
