What's wrong?
The 2016 International Prostar and Transtar trucks in this recall use an Eaton Fuller FR-Series 10-speed manual transmission. The shift lever tells the transmission which gear set to engage, and reverse is supposed to disengage cleanly when the driver moves the lever back to neutral or into a forward gear.
Inside the transmission, a spacer assembly is supposed to leave enough clearance for the main shaft key, a small locating piece that keeps parts aligned on the shaft. In the affected transmissions, the spacer does not provide that clearance. The key can move out of position, which lets the reverse gear slide along the main shaft and stay engaged after the lever has been moved out of reverse. If the driver then selects a forward gear, reverse and the forward gear can be engaged at the same time, causing the transmission to mechanically lock.
The warning sign is harder shifting around reverse. A driver can feel the need to use increased force when shifting into reverse or out of reverse.
Who's affected?
Covers two International truck lines from the 2016 model year, with the manual transmission as the shared component.

A matching year and model does not guarantee inclusion. Check your VIN to confirm whether your specific truck is included.
What's the safety risk?
After reverse is selected and the transmission is shifted to neutral, the vehicle can move backward unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash. A harder shift into or out of reverse is the warning sign to take seriously. Use extra care when maneuvering and schedule the dealer inspection soon. Repair is free at any franchised International dealer.
What should I do?

- Contact a franchised International dealer to schedule the free transmission inspection and any needed repair or replacement for the reverse-gear engagement problem.
- Bring the recall notice if you have it, and reference recall number 15V693 when you call.
- Use extra care when shifting out of reverse until the repair is complete; confirm the truck is stopped before selecting a forward gear.
What happens at the repair
At the dealer, an International technician inspects the Eaton Fuller transmission. If the inspection finds an affected transmission, the dealer repairs it or replaces it. The recall repair is available now, and parts and labor are free of charge. International has a standard reimbursement plan on file for eligible transmission repairs paid before the recall notice. If you paid out of pocket for this condition, ask the service desk how to submit documentation under that plan.
