2016 Volvo Vn Recall 15V682: Reverse Gear Engagement

Recall 15V682 covers 7 2016 Volvo Vn trucks where reverse gear can stay engaged after shifting. Free repair at any franchised Volvo dealer once available.

Volvo is recalling 7 2016 Vn trucks with Eaton Fuller FR-Series 10-speed manual transmissions because the reverse gear can stay engaged after the shift lever moves to neutral. That can make the truck move backward after the driver shifts out of reverse, increasing crash risk; the Volvo dealer repair will be free once available.

What's wrong?

The 2016 Volvo Vn trucks in this recall use an Eaton Fuller FR-Series 10-speed manual transmission. The transmission routes engine power through selected gears so the driver can back up, shift to neutral, or move forward. Inside the transmission, the reverse gear is supposed to disengage when the shift lever leaves reverse.

On affected trucks, a spacer assembly does not leave enough clearance for the main shaft key. That key can be forced out of position. When the driver shifts from reverse to neutral, the reverse gear can stay engaged. If the driver then selects a forward gear, the transmission can mechanically lock because reverse and a forward gear are engaged at the same time.

Before the failure, the driver can feel the problem at the shifter. Eaton reported that shifting into or out of reverse can require more force than normal.

What's the safety risk?

If the transmission is shifted from reverse into neutral, the vehicle can unexpectedly move backward, increasing the risk of a crash. Extra force needed to shift into or out of reverse is the warning sign Volvo identified. If that happens, stop in a safe place and call the dealer. Repair will be free at any franchised Volvo dealer once available.

What happens at the repair

Volvo's filing says owner notices went out after the recall began on December 21, 2015. Treat the final repair as not open until a Volvo dealer confirms parts and instructions for your VIN. At the dealer, a Volvo technician inspects the Eaton Fuller FR-Series 10-speed manual transmission and repairs the transmission if the inspection shows it is needed. The dealer repair will be free once available, with parts and labor covered under recall 15V682.
